US Wiley launches new programme of Open Access journals - 02 Feb 2011

Publisher John Wiley & Sons, US, has announced the launch of Wiley Open Access, a new publishing programme of open access journals. The first journals will launch shortly, publishing primary peer-reviewed research in a range of broad-based subject disciplines in the life and biomedical sciences, including neuroscience, microbiology, ecology and evolution.

Wiley Open Access will provide authors wishing to publish their research outcomes in an open access journal with a range of new high quality publications which meet the requirements of funding organisations and institutions where these apply.

The new journals are being launched in collaboration with a group of international professional and scholarly societies with which Wiley currently partners. Each journal will appoint an Editor-in-Chief and Editorial Board responsible for ensuring that all articles are rigorously peer-reviewed. Each journal will be offered with the full functionality of Wiley Online Library.

Wiley Open Access journals will be published under the Creative Commons Attribution Non Commercial License, which permits use, distribution and reproduction in any medium, provided the original work is properly cited and is not used for commercial purposes. A publication fee will be payable by authors on acceptance of their articles. Wiley will introduce a range of new payment schemes to enable academic and research institutions, funders, societies, and corporations to actively support their researchers and members who wish to publish in Wiley Open Access journals.

UK Android overtakes Symbian as leading smart phone platform, says Canalys report - 02 Feb 2011

Research firm Canalys, UK, recently published its final fourth quarter 2010 global country-level smart phone market data, which reportedly says that Google's Android has become the leading platform. Shipments of Android-based smart phones reached 32.9 million, while devices running Nokia's Symbian platform trailed slightly at 31.0 million worldwide.

However, Nokia did retain its position as the leading global smart phone vendor, with a share of 28 percent. The fourth quarter also saw the worldwide smart phone market continue to soar, with shipments of 101.2 million units representing year-on-year growth of 89 percent. The final quarter took shipments for the year to fractionally below 300 million units, with an annual growth rate of 80 percent over 2009.

In the fourth quarter of 2010, volumes of Google OS-based smart phones (Android, OMS and Tapas) were again boosted by strong performances from a number of vendors, notably LG, Samsung, Acer and HTC. Their volumes across these platforms grew 4,127 percent, 1,474 percent, 709 percent and 371 percent respectively year-on-year. HTC and Samsung together accounted for nearly 45 percent of Google OS-based handset shipments.

At a regional level, Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) remained the largest market, with shipments totalling 38.8 million and a year-on-year growth rate of 90 percent. Nokia continued to lead in EMEA and Asia Pacific, but in 2010 it was overtaken by RIM in Latin America, which shipped over a million more units than Nokia in the fourth quarter of 2010. The vendor was particularly helped by the popularity of its mid-range smart phones, such as its Curve family of devices.

The US continued its reign as the largest country market in terms of shipments, at more than double the size of the Chinese smart phone market. RIM recaptured first place from Apple, as the latter experienced its usual US seasonal dip, and RIM benefited from the first full quarter of shipments for the BlackBerry Torch. HTC successfully maintained its third-place ranking in the US for the third consecutive quarter, driven by its speed to market with the latest Android updates and new Windows Phone 7 devices.

Android was by far the largest smart phone platform in the US market in the fourth quarter of 2010, with shipments of 12.1 million units - nearly three times those of RIM's BlackBerry devices. Windows Phone 7 devices appeared too late in the quarter to take full advantage of holiday season purchasing. As a result, Microsoft lost share in the US, from 8 percent in the fourth quarter of 2009 to 5 percent in the corresponding 2010 quarter.

Analysis of the published country-level data shows that, around the world, the strength of smart phone performances remained diverse. Under pressure from Huawei and Samsung in particular, Nokia's share in China slipped to 56 percent, down from 76 percent a year ago, despite growing its volume in the country by over 70 percent in the same period.

US Apple seen to be increasing control over App Store - 02 Feb 2011

Computer and software firm Apple Inc., US, is reportedly further tightening its control of the App Store. According to reports published in the New York Times, Apple has advised some application developers, including Sony, that they can no longer sell e-books within their apps unless the transactions go through Apple's system. It reportedly rejected Sony's iPhone application that would have allowed people to buy and read e-books from the Sony Reader Store.

Apple has clarified that it was still allowing customers to read e-books they bought elsewhere within apps.

Apps like the Kindle app from Amazon.com and the one that Sony submitted open up a browser window when a user wants to buy something. This allows the app makers to argue that technically the purchase is happening on the web, not within the app.

Apple is reportedly saying that app makers must allow those purchases to happen within the app, not in a separate browser window, with Apple getting its standard 30 percent cut of the transaction. At the moment this applies only to e-book purchases.

The new requirement is seen to reflect a shift for Apple, which has traditionally made more money selling hardware than platforms. Also, Apple had recently indicated that it would be more collaborative, not less, with magazine publishers and other content producers that wanted more control over how to distribute content on the iPad. Industry observers point out that Apple may increasingly find platforms more economically significant than devices.

US ACS launches inaugural edition of International Year of Chemistry Virtual Journal - 02 Feb 2011

The American Chemical Society (ACS) has launched the inaugural edition of its International Year of Chemistry (IYC) Virtual Journal, an online snapshot of the different ways in which chemistry improves everyday life for people worldwide. It includes a special video welcome from Dr. Nancy B. Jackson, who serves as ACS President during the IYC.

Every month through this landmark year, the IYC Virtual Journal will showcase ways in which chemistry improves everyday life for people around the world. It illustrates how chemists and other scientists work to protect the environment; develop lifesaving new medicines; create cleaner, greener and more sustainable sources of energy; design new materials for cars, buildings, electronics, medical implants and a host of other products.

The virtual journal's content is based on research published in ACS' 39 peer-reviewed scientific journals and Chemical & Engineering News, its weekly newsmagazine. IYC Virtual Journal also connects visitors with content in ACS' popular online calendar, developed specifically for the IYC. The calendar serves as a virtual time machine, transporting the public back to some of the epic events and great intellects that shaped modern society through the magic of chemistry.

Called IYC-365: Chemistry for Life, the calendar links almost 250 days of the year to notable events highlighting chemistry's important role in health, medicine, energy, the environment and related fields.

The IYC Virtual Journal and IYC: 365 are part of ACS' celebration of the International Year of Chemistry. The 63rd General Assembly of the United Nations proclaimed 2011 as envisioning a worldwide celebration of the achievements of chemistry and its contributions to the well-being of humankind. Also being celebrated in 2011 is the centennial of the awarding of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry to Marie Curie for her work on radioactivity, and the 100th anniversary of the founding of the International Association of Chemical Societies.
