Safe Surfing Tips

  • Type URLs into your browser's address bar rather than clicking or cutting and pasting.
  • Check a website's domain owner by visiting www.whois.net.
  • Always look for the padlock icon in your browser's task bar when entering sensitive information
  • Make sure the site's domain starts with https:// to make sure it's secure.
  • Make sure the website's upper-level domain matches that of the organization's homepage. For example, if you intend to visit www.mybank.com/infoupdate, make sure that the homepage of the website contains 'www.mybank.com' in the URL.

Computer Tips

  • Use a firewall program to stop uninvited access to your computer.
  • Use the latest version of your browser, spyware and virus protection software, and operating system.
  • Don't open files, click hyperlinks, or download programs that were sent to you unexpectedly or by strangers.

Privacy Tips

  • Be careful when giving out personal information on the phone, via email, or over the Internet. If you receive emails asking you to update account information, call the company's customer service line and verify that the email is legitimate.
  • Avoid storing personal information (such as full credit card numbers, account passwords, or your full SSN) on your computer.
  • Make sure you always sign out of accounts if you use a public or shared computer.
  • Don't use an automatic sign in feature, unless it is on your personal computer that no one else has access to.
