Larry the Downing Street Cat in Royal Wedding Attire

Thursday April 28, 2011
CAT
With just a few hours to go before the Royal Wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton, even Larry the 10 Downing Street cat got into the spirit, dressing up in a Union Jack bowtie when he made his appearance in the Cabinet Room.

London is filling up with tourists and even the most cynical can not deny the romanic buzz.

Check out the latest photos of last minute preparations for the Royal Wedding and come back Saturday for more pictures of the wedding itself.

By the way, just as an aside for cat lovers, Larry was in the news in his own right this week after he caught his first rat since taking up residence at the heart of government.

Tate Seeks Volunteers in Support of Ai Weiwei

Wednesday April 27, 2011

The Tate Modern is seeking volunteers for a free public event on Saturday, April 30 in support of Chinese artist Ai Weiwei who has not been seen since his arrest in early April. Ai Weiwei's installation, "Sunflower Seeds" which, since October, has filled the Tate Modern's Turbine Hall with 100 million, handpainted porcelain sunflower seeds, closes on May 2.

To mark to mark the final weekend of the exhibition, and to demonstrate support for the disappeared artist, British artist Hamish Fulton will present an action from noon to 2 p.m. entitled Slowalk (In support of Ai Weiwei). It will be followed by a free screening of Ai Weiwei's documentary Disturbing the Peace in the Starr Auditorium at 2:30 p.m.

Volunteer participants are needed for Fulton's Slowalk.... If you would like to take part, you should email hamishfulton.volunteer@tate.org.uk, no later than Friday, April 29 for details.

A statement issued this morning by the Tate said, "Tate is an organisation which places artists at the very centre of its activities. We remain deeply concerned about the current disappearance of the artist Ai Weiwei...The Release Ai Weiwei signage will remain on the front of Tate Modern until we have more news regarding the artist's arrest."

Royal Wedding Madness Shifts Up a Gear

Tuesday April 26, 2011
royal-wedding-camper

With only two days to go before the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton, Royal Wedding Madness has gotten well and truly off the ground - or on the ground, depending on your point of view. That's certainly the view of campers Terry Hutt, left, and John Loughrey, bottom.

If you were planning to cruise up on the day to find a good viewing spot, forget it. The campers, of whom Loughrey was the first, have already been making themselves comfy on the ground all day today as close to Westminster Abbey as they can possibly get. Rain and colder weather is predicted so I hope they brought their blankies and longjohns as well as all those Union Jacks.

I'll be watching from the best spot of all - from the sofa at a friends house, in front of their telly, followed by a street party if the weather holds. If you want to join a happy crowd, there will be big screens in Hyde Park and Trafalgar Square. And don't worry if Royal Wedding watching is your private, guilty pleasure. You can watch the wedding on your smart phone - it's being streamed live on YouTube at www.youtube.com/TheRoyalChannel.
