Does a Home Business Need Insurance?

Wednesday July 6, 2011

This is a question I receive a lot. Home business owners want to know if it is really necessarily to look into business insurance. My answer is always "yes", followed by "it also depends on what your business is". If you are crafting baby blankets, your need for insurance will probably be less than a lawn mowing business with a couple of employees.

I also caution that it isn't a good idea to make assumptions when it comes to protecting yourself and your business. For instance, don't think that your business property is covered just because it resides inside your home. Homeowner's insurance doesn't necessarily cover business assets. Another is the use of your personal vehicle for business. There are instances that commercial vehicle coverage would be more prudent than personal coverage. Happy Fourth of July!

As I reflect on the great blessings that have come from being an American citizen, I am grateful for all the freedoms at my fingertips. I would be remiss if I didn't say a public thank you to all the military men and women who are fighting to protect those freedoms.

One of the greatest things about living in the U.S.A is the ability to create. For me, it has been the ability to take what I love, build a business that works for me and my family and make an income. What a blessing it is to have a home-based business.

In this country, where there is a will there is a way. Whether you are a stay-at-home mom or dad or just someone who is sick and tired of making the long trek into the office, there is opportunity to strike out on your own. Consider that nearly 50% of all businesses in America are home businesses and of those, 80% are sole proprietorships. If you are ready to explore becoming an independent entrepreneur who gets to work within the walls of your own home, check out these great resources (after the big BBQ of course):

The 5 Client Relationship Commandments

Friday July 1, 2011

Recently, I had the good fortune of singing at a big network marketing company's annual convention. There were a bunch of us on the production and entertainment side who were self-employed. This meant we were all trying to make the right moves to please the client and get rebooked. I must admit, some were better at it than others. As I observed my comrades throughout the weekend, I was shocked by some of the idiotic things I witnessed.

I took my observations of both good and bad behavior, pooled that with my years of experience as a freelancer and business manager and came up with some client relationship commandments. If it is repeat business you seek (and who doesn't!?!) then check out these 5 Client Relationship Commandments.

What is the worst thing you have ever witnessed a freelancer do around a client?
