2011 Oscars Red Carpet Vintage

Monday February 28, 2011

The Oscars are the biggest night for Hollywood, but they are also the Superbowl of vintage fashion . There have been many showstopping vintage moments on the Academy Awards red carpet from superstars like Julia Roberts to Reese Witherspoon. This year there were plenty of amazing couture gowns (helloooo, Cate Blanchett in Givenchy!), but sadly, not so much vintage.

Marisa Tomei is a very committed vintage lover and wears it to many red carpet events. Unfortunately, the vintage Charles James gown she wore to this year's Oscars was not her best. The gown was navy satin on top with iridescent plum colored organza ruffles on the bottom. It wasn't very interesting or flattering, which amazes me because of what a lovely figure she has.

Best Actor winner Colin Firth's stunning wife Livia wore a sort of vintage dress that was custom made. Her dress was upcycled; made from 11 different dresses from the period of the film her husband was nominated for, The Kings Speech. It wasn't my favorite look of the night, but it was very pretty.

Despite  some reports, hostess Anne Hathaway's pre-show red carpet Valentino gown (which she wore with the designer himself as her accessory) was not vintage. When asked, Hathaway was very careful to call it "Valentino Archive" and not vintage because it is from 2002, yet people have taken the liberty of calling in vintage regardless.

Diane Von Furstenberg to Re-Release Vintage Dresses and Prints!

Thursday February 17, 2011

Finding a vintage Diane Von Furstenberg wrap dress from the 70s is the pinnacle for most vintage lovers. The dress reinvented women's ready to wear fashion and has never gone out of style since.

Now you don't have to search and search or pay top dollar on eBay to get your own DVF wrap dress, because she is re-releasing the the classic in several original prints from the 70s starting February 22. I'm so excited to see what prints she decides to use.  I certainly wouldn't be disappointed if she released the leopard print seen in this dress she wore with friend Andy Warhol. Oh so many goosebumps!

More Award Shows, More Vintage Moments

Tuesday February 1, 2011

Award season is my favorite because it's when all the best vintage comes out. I especially love when new starlets get into the habit of wearing vintage early on.

Glee star Dianna Agron wore a stunning vintage Chanel to the Screen Actors Guild Awards. I don't watch the show, so I wasn't familiar with Agron, but now she will certainly be one for me to watch. I think her tea length frock will be an inspiration this prom season.

Kyra Sedgwick also wore vintage; hers, a Thierry Mugler column gown that was truly jaw dropping. I'm not sure why she didn't wear that dress to the Golden Globes, because it is much more formal than the Pucci dress she did wear.

It just goes to show that you can wear vintage at any age and be fabulous, as long as it's the right dress.

Young Celebrities Talk Vintage, But Do They Have a Clue?

Saturday January 29, 2011

For some reson, I recently read an article about young Disney star Selena Gomez; the  headline was "Selena Gomez: I love jeggings". Why I read it, I don't know, but the only other quote in the article says "I buy scarves and necklaces in loads of different colors and textures, too. These accessories can help give you a vintage look". When I read this all I could do was role my eyes. Scarves and necklaces with jeggings do not, under any circumstances make a "vintage look". I mean, jeggings, which were just invented 5 minutes ago, please.

Not but a few days later, I read an interview with actress Elle Fanning in which she professed her love of vintage as well. Only 12, I said to myself, "Girl, what could you possibly know about vintage?" This was harsh, since I was starting to get into vintage at the same age, and  since she did know that vintage usually doesn't have labels though,  I did a little checking.

From what i've read, it seems that Ms. Fanning proclamations of love for vintage may be legit. Amongst some of her interviews says 50s and 70s styles are her favorite, she names actual vintage shops she frequents, and professes being a sueprfan of Marilyn Monroe. She may be 12, but she actually seems like she's on the track to being a real vintage pro, and not just a phony dropping the word vintage into interviews.

As for Ms. Gomez, I couldn't find any other instances of her talking about vintage or having any knowledge about it. It seems like her use of "vintage" is publicist coached nonsense meant to make her seem more down to earth. Maybe, I'm wrong; or maybe she's just like so many young people who have no idea what vintage actually is. So often I see the term "vintage" applied to stores like Forever 21 and Abercrombie & Fitch. The word has been hijacked by marketers, so I wouldn't be surprised if Selena Gomez actually thinks that bright, textured scarves  are vintage.

Although disheartened by Selena Gomez's misinformation about vintage, I am eager to see how Elle Fanning's style develops and if she is truly a vintage lover. Elle may even be a future Most Vintage Personality someday.

Golden Globes Vintage Report

Tuesday January 18, 2011
I love the fact that vintage has become so important to stylists that every major awards show now has at least one star wearing vintage. The 2011 Golden Globe Awards were no exception.

Though more celebrities wore vintage accessories than clothing, Julianna Margulies wore a pink and black vintage YSL gown. The dress was gorgeous, but she did it little justice with her terrible posture and strange posing.

It seems that stylists certainly heard the news that Pantone chose a pink shade as 2011's color of the year, because Julianna wasn't the only one wearing the hue. There was more pink then I've ever seen on the red carpet and in every shade imaginable.

Though not "vintage" exactly, Ryan Gosling's 60's-esque velvet Ferragamo suit was so divine. I always feel for the men on the red carpet because there are so few things you can do with men's formal and still took classy. The velvet is not traditional, but the mod cut and scruffy hair and beard make it fresh enough for me. His Blue Valentine costar Michelle Williams looked very vintage as well in daisy appliqued Valentino couture.

"Rosie the Riviter" Poster Inspiration Passes at 86

Monday January 3, 2011

It was a fluke that Geraldine Doyle's likeness became so iconic. As a 17 year old, while working briefly at a metal factory, her photo was taken wearing a polka-dot head scarf by a United Press International photographer. When artist J Howard Miller needed inspiration to create the "We Can Do It" poster for Westinghouse, it was Doyle's photo that caught his eye.

Though the factory gig only lasted a few weeks; (Doyle, a cellist, quit after learning that another worker's hands had been severely injured on the job), her image has been beyond iconic for over years; first in the morale boosting "We Can Do It" poster (nicknamed "Rosie the Riveter" after a popular song), and later as a symbol of the feminist movement.

For 40 years Doyle had no knowledge of the famous poster with a striking resemblance to her, but she was proud to have been able to contribute to it.  She once said "You're not supposed to have too much pride, but I can't help have some in that poster." Mrs. Doyle passed away at the age of 86 on December 26, 2010.
