The Support Tourism in Egypt initiative is the brainchild of Mahmoud Saad, a young Egyptian photographer whose aim is to revive and promote tourism in Egypt, through organised walks that roam the heart of Cairo.

Four years ago, Saad started off his photography career and was inspired by the authentic Egyptian architecture, ancient neighbourhoods and of course, the people. He organised many walks, aiming to capture the essence of the city on camera.

“However, after the revolution I decided to take the walks a step further,“ says Saad. “Now the aim is to know our history and to shop, even if it’s for a bottle of water or a small present to boost the local economy,” he continued, explaining that the plan is to video- tape such walks and post them on You tube to promote tourism and emphasise the fact that Cairo is safe.

Finally he wants to encourage whoever wants to join in and clean the streets, as well as boost awareness among shop owners.

“I was inspired by an event that I saw on facebook last week along the same lines. It was to promote tourism through numerous banners that were held high in Tahrir square. However, I wanted to take action, so I decided to go and do something about it," he adds.

Saad’s initiative started off last Friday, when he organised the first walk from Bab El Fotouh to Khan El Khalili. The turnout was a group of 40 Egyptians from all walks of life, aged from 15 to 50 years old.

“We all agreed to set our political differences aside and focus on helping our country,” he said  The tour with gifts, food and drinks earned about LE 3 to 4000 in one day, so they managed to help some people.

“We have to start with ourselves, even If I have LE1 to spend, it can help to support a family.  I got lots of ideas from people in our group," Saad elaborated.  "One suggested that we organise the walks through small tourism companies, and so help them as well. Others wanted to make t-shirts with a special logo on them, and there are those who will promote the concept on their blogs".

The next walk will take place in the Saida Zeinab district. Places to visit include Prince Taz palace, Ebn Toulon mosque, and Al Samaa Khana.

Date: Friday 25 February.

Time: 10 am to 4 pm.

Meeting point is the Citadel so that there is a place for people to park.
