Happy Harry Potter Weekend!

Thursday July 14, 2011

Unless you've been living under a rock, you know that the final movie installment of Harry Potter opens tonight at midnight (at least here in the U.S.). So what are you doing to celebrate?

In the spirit of all-things-Harry-Potter, I've put together a list of fun & funky resources to make your weekend even better:

How Expensive Is Your School?

Tuesday July 12, 2011

In an effort to help students -- and their families -- better understand the costs of college, the U.S. Department of Education has a website that sorts schools by cost and type: The College Affordability and Transparency Center. You can see which schools costs the most -- either by basic tuition and fees or by the net cost ("cost of attendance minus grant and scholarship aid") -- as well as which ones are most affordable.

Of course, as the site notes and as you should always keep in mind when looking at school costs, the sticker price for a school is often an inaccurate reflection of what you'll pay as a student there. Financial aid should be considered and your individual situation may mean that the official cost of attending a certain institution is vastly different than the actual price you'll pay. But if you're concerned about how expensive your degree is, the site offers a great resource for finding alternatives -- or for realizing that you're actually getting a great deal.

Ready for a Road Trip?

Thursday July 7, 2011

An interesting story this morning on NPR -- a story that focused on scalpers who sell camping permits in Yosemite, actually -- featured a few young men who were on a road trip.

While the report was obviously focusing on something else, the experience of the young men was a pleasant reminder of just how perfectly road trips and summer fit together. Even if you have to start or go back to school in a little over a month, there's still plenty of time to put together a quick road trip. You can go with high school friends; you can go with college friends; you can go with a combination of both; you can pick people up along the way. No matter whom you're with, however, there are seemingly endless ideas of where and how to go on a college road trip.

Bon voyage!
