The National Air and Space Museum will display a temporary exhibit "NASA | ART: 50 Years of Exploration" featuring more than 70 works of art--ranging from the illustrative to the abstract from May 28 - Oct. 9, 2011. The exhibit presents an unparalleled selection of works commissioned by the NASA Art Program which provides a unique way to communicate the accomplishments, setbacks and sheer excitement of space exploration over the past five decades. The selected works span the history of NASA and include paintings, drawings, photographs, sculptures and other media by such artists as Annie Leibovitz, Nam June Paik, Robert Rauschenberg, Norman Rockwell, Andy Warhol, William Wegman and Jamie Wyeth.

The Journey Through Hallowed Ground (JTHG) Partnership is a non-profit organization dedicated to raising awareness of the unparalleled history within the region from Monticello to Gettysburg and has created the Journey Through Hallowed Ground National Heritage Area and has had the Old Carolina Road (Rt. 15/20/231) from Gettysburg, through Maryland, to Monticello designated a National Scenic Byway. In commemoration of the 150th Anniversary of the Civil War, the JTHG Partnership has developed a campaign entitled
Take the Journey to Where America Happened and Discover 400 Years of History on a Single Tank of Gas to encourage the public to explore and appreciate this historic region. Additional programs include the following:
Living Legacy Tree Planting Program
The JTHG Partnership's Living Legacy project will create a living memorial of trees to recognize the soldiers who perished in the Civil War. A detailed landscape plan will be developed in phases over the next four years and will support planting 620,000 trees (one for each fallen soldier) along the National Scenic Byway.

On Friday, July 22, 2011, the JTHG and Warner Bros' will offer a rare occasion to meet the movie stars from Ronald F. Maxwell's definitive epic Civil War film, "Gods and Generals" and enjoy the new Extended Director's Cut on the silver screen at the Hylton Performing Arts Center at George Mason University's Manassas campus.
