Switzerland is expensive. Like anywhere on earth however, there is a wealth of free and inexpensive things to do in compelling destinations like Geneva, so the traveler on a budget doesn't have to have a lesser experience at all. Writer C. H. Kwak, our budget travel guru, uncovers eight budget pleasures in Geneva: Affordable Guide to Geneva.

Remember also that you can save some money on hotels and museums in Switzerland and get tickets for the go-everywhere Swiss Postal Buses with a Swiss Rail Pass (buy direct).

Alternative Travel Resources: Twitter and Podcasts

Thursday May 5, 2011

First came the guidebook, then the Internet. But it isn't just about web pages these days. Travel apps and resources abound.

On Twitter you can pick out people who know some part of the planet and follow their travels in 140 character bursts. Hemingway would be proud of the terseness.

But what if you combined Twitter and Chat? I'm telling you, talking about Tuscan food and where to eat it on Twitter Chat is a cacophonous riot, like being at a party in which the punch bowl is drained with great frequency by hyperactive lovers of the good life. If you want to know what I mean, check out the transcript of a Twitter chat that featured yours truly (@wanderingitaly) put on by Dreaming of Italy: Travel to Tuscany and Tuscany for Foodies. Better yet, sign up to Twitter, follow @dreamofitaly and join the party every Wednesday. You'll find many travel writers and expats extolling the virtues of a trip to Italy and spilling their travel secrets freely (it's that punch).

And then there are podcasts. You can listen to all the travel talk you can stomach on your phone, your tablet device, or your computer. Imagine! You can get your travel fix any time you want. Cool. And, oh yeah, I'll be chatting with Sara, Jessica and Michelle on the Eye on Italy Podcast soon.

Is there any need to actually get out of the house anymore?

Mezes and Raki at Imroz | Picture of the Week

Wednesday May 4, 2011

mezes imroz istanbul picture
Think you'll have trouble finding something to eat in exotic Istanbul? Heck, you don't even have to have a waiter who speaks English. Here at the popular Imroz, as in many places, examples of the mezes are brought to you in shrink wrapped plates and you pick by pointing. It's popular to order a bottle of the anise liquor Raki and water with your mezes.

Imroz is located on Nevizade Street, a narrow alleyway in the Beyoğlu district clogged with bars and restaurants that give it a festive party atmosphere after the sun goes down. The exact address is: Nevizade Sokak 24.
