I look forward to my Easter tradition of seeing
Zippos Circus at Blackheath and yesterday my daughter and I had a fantastic day out. We saw the Horsepower show which involves some palominos displaying their talents and motorbike horsepower in the second act with riders who had us all staring in disbelief at their bravery.
The show has talented aerial artists who had me gasping in awe as safety nets are not used and these girls were hanging from just their toes! The Argentinian Gauchos juggled fire with their feet and did a brilliant drumming and dancing act called 'Indian Spirit', and Norman Barrett's budgies make me laugh every year.
For my daughter, a trip to the circus means candy floss (cotton candy), popcorn, a big souvenir brochure and something that lights up to wave in the dark (this year it was a singing and flashing butterfly wand). For me, I want to feel like a child again and see truly talented acts and Zippos Circus had me mesmerized. The finale had the audience aghast and we jumped to our feet to applaud without any prompting. The show is on at Blackheath till 3 May then tours the UK.

I'll confess straight away, I'm a fan of David Long's books. He makes historical information accessible and entertaining to read. Plus, obviously, I'm a London geek so this book is a real treat for me and all London enthusiasts.
The author remembered working in the City of London many years ago and enjoyed meandering through the alleyways at lunchtime to find a quiet spot in a busy city. While researching this book he was pleased to find many of the courtyards are still there and the city is still a fascinating place to get lost in.

Some UK and US chocolate bars are said to be the same but I did a taste test with friends (from the UK, US, and elsewhere) to find out it this was true. I chose the nearest equivalent bars and we assessed them side by side to see which was better. We looked at appearance, texture, etc. but really it was the taste test that decided things.
