With emPower, Your Preschooler Can Train Like a Power Ranger

Friday April 29, 2011

Can you believe the Power Rangers are almost 20 years old? And they don't look a day past their teens! Maybe it's their exercise regimen?

Now your little one can "Train Like a Ranger" thanks to Saban's Power Rangers emPOWER. The online program provides families with exercise and activity videos (starring the cast from the Power Rangers Samurai), recipes, downloadable coloring sheets with fun nutritional facts, blogs and the chance to be featured as "Ranger Of The Week," all with the goal of battling childhood obesity and increasing the overall good health of young people.

Elementary schools are also being encouraged to join the movement -- those that participate in Ranger Training have the chance to win $10,000 and a visit from the Power Rangers. The first winner was Reagan Elementary in Rogers, AR, which received both money for their gym program and a special visit from the Rangers!

Author Sandra Boynton to Host Digital Book "Signing"

Thursday April 28, 2011

Welcome to the 21st Century dear readers!

Popular author Sandra Boynton will be navigating uncharted territory this Monday, May 2 when she participates in a digital book signing of her The Going to Bed Book ebook app (based on her popular The Going To Bed Book [compare prices]).

Kids and their parents are invited to attend the event in their pajamas which will be held at 7 p.m. at Barnes & Noble's Upper East Side store, located at 150 E 86th Street at Lexington Avenue, in New York City.

First Boyton will read the old-fashioned way -- from her classic book. (To date, there are over 5 million copies of this book in print.) Then, using Barnes & Noble's NOOK Color eReader tablet, she'll demonstrate the new app version of her book, with a screen projection behind her. On hand will be Billy J. Kramer, the narrator of The Going to Bed Book app; Boynton's long-time songwriting and music producing partner, pianist/composer Michael Ford; and the "Moo Brigade," a team of ten college students, each with a Nook Color tablet, ready to offer children individually the opportunity to try out The Going to Bed Book app themselves.

When the fun is done, Boynton will digitally sign and personalize NOOK readers using a software developed by her digital publisher, Loud Crow Interactive.

"We're definitely excited to be able to make history with this first-ever eBook app signing with Sandra," says Calvin Wang, Founder and President of Loud Crow Interactive. "It's been an amazing collaboration between Loud Crow and Boynton Moo Media and for us to share this watershed moment in book publishing makes this partnership even more extraordinary."

Definitely sounds like a lot of fun!

Turn the Page Tuesday: Snowball's Arctic Adventure

Tuesday April 26, 2011

So the weather is finally warm (or warmer at least), how about we read a book about the cold?

Snowball's Antarctic Adventures (manufacturer's site) by Tim Ostermeyer is a beautifully-photographed book starring Snowball the Emperor penguin. The story follows Snowball and other Emperor penguins as they explore the Antarctic landscape and look for other forms of wildlife.

Such a gorgeous book, featuring breathtaking countryside and interesting facts about the native animals of the region. Ostermeyer, a master photographer, does amazing work -- not just taking the photos, but choosing ones that make for an interesting tale.

A wonderful story that will teach you and your preschooler a thing or two!

PNC and Sesame Workshop Team Up to Teach Preschoolers About Smart Saving

Monday April 25, 2011

Want to make sure your preschooler is financially secure as an adult? While there are no guarantees in life, a good way to teach them about money is to start at a young age.

That's the thinking behind a new initiative from the PNC Financial Services Group, the PNC Foundation and the folks at Sesame Workshop.

The bilingual program, "For Me, for You, for Later: First Steps to Spending, Sharing, and Saving," includes a DVD starring Elmo, Cookie Monster and their friends; a parent/caregiver guide and a children's activity book that introduces concepts of spending, sharing and saving. The kits are available at PNC branches, pncgrowupgreat.com and sesamestreet.org/save.

The PNC Foundation has doled out over $12 million in grants, including the one to Sesame Workshop. Other recipients include the Newark Public Library and Montclair State University.
