Unique Gift for Your Favorite Hairstylist

Tuesday May 10, 2011
Photo © The Real Scissor Bracelet (Patent Pending)

I stumbled upon this pretty nifty gift idea via Facebook the other day. It's a bracelet that's made from an actual (non-sharpened) pair of shears. They are adorned with adjustable faux gem encrusted tension screws that allow you to wear the scissors open or shut.

I couldn't think of a more appropriate gift for your favorite hairstylist for just about any occasion. The obvious like birthdays and holidays come to mind, but the not-s0-obvious like hair school graduations for your daughter, anniversaries in the salon from a salon manager or owner, or just a thank-you to a special stylist in your life.

Hint, hint...

Reader Mail: Will a Perm Take in Fine Hair?

Tuesday May 10, 2011

One reader recently wrote in on one of our user answer sections on perms. Stevie writes: I have healthy, fine, baby soft hair that's shoulder length and wish for a digital perm. I've been told that those with fine healthy stick straight hair, I might not even see a result after getting a perm. Would a digital perm hold in my hair? I really want this perm for the summer.

First and foremost, you have to understand a digital perm. A digital perm is different from a standard perm, in that it uses heat produced from a giant machine to perm your hair.  The machine is actually very similar looking to the way that perms were done over 70 years ago, although I believe the risk of fire is far reduced (thank goodness, right?). The process takes several hours and the results promise to be very big, loose, "beachy" waves.

It's hard to tell how well any perm will take, unfortunately. Typically, finer hair will respond better to a perm than course hair. However, fine hair can also be easily damaged by a perm (or even by heat). The best way to know how your hair will respond to a perm is to find a stylist that you can trust. Ask about experience with perms, how often they do them, and to see photos of results.

A perm breaks down the bonds in your hair and semi-permanently restructures those bonds into a new pattern. In order to reverse a perm, you have to rebreak the bonds again. The risk of severe breakage and damage to your hair is great, so it's important to be sure you're dealing with a professional that cares about your hair.

I hope that helps a little, Stevie.

Well, this is it. The very moment we've all been waiting for. The first glimpse of Kate just 8 minutes before the start of her royal wedding reveal that her hair is styled mostly down. No updo for this modern bride.

Soft curls cascade down Kate's scalloped Sarah Burton lace dress. A delicate tiara sets off her half-back hairstyle. It all looks absolutely stunning under a very long, sheer veil.

Reader Mail: What Product Will Control Fly-a-Ways and Give Shine?

Tuesday April 26, 2011

CHI Pliable PolishJill writes: "I know you know everything there is to know about hair (by the way, Jill, that's a perfect way to start an email)... I need a recommendation! I need a product for shine and maybe some fly-a-way control. I cut my hair to about chin length and had some awesome highlights and lowlights put it. But, now I NEED shine... What can you recommend?"

Great question, Jill. The first product that comes to mind for this situation is CHI's Pliable Polish. It comes in a tube and is a light weight paste. After styling your hair, place a small amount (approximately a pea size) in your hand, rub your hands together to emulsify, and run your hands over your fly-a-way hair and through your hair, styling with your fingers. You'll notice that the product is a little iridescent, which is great for adding shine and bouncing light. The product is heavy enough to tame even the most annoying fly-a-ways, but light enough to not interfere with your style. It's great for styling little boys short hair too (doesn't leave hair crispy or gunky).
