Video of Libyan Rebels at Misurata’s Airport

A Euronews video report showed Libyan rebels taking control of the airport in the besieged city of Misurata on Wednesday.

As my colleague C.J. Chivers reports, Libyan rebels in Misurata, the country’s third-largest city, wrested control of the besieged town’s airport from forces loyal to Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi on Wednesday.

The rebels also seized much-needed weapons and ammunition, and even some antiaircraft missiles left behind by the retreating government forces.

Alberto Arce, a Spanish journalist and blogger, filed a video report for Euronews, which showed the rebels taking control of the airport and celebrating their victory.

This video, uploaded to YouTube on Wednesday by opposition activists in Misurata, appears to show the fighters examining the weapons they seized at the airport and further celebrations:

Mr. Arce’s video report also includes footage of the rebel fighters at the front, and an interview with one man who appealed to the outside world to “give us the tools to push them away ourselves.”

Another Spanish journalist who was at the airport, Javier Espinosa of El Mundo, reported on Twitter that the rebels has captured at least nine government soldiers. According to Mr. Espinosa, one the detained soldiers claimed that the troops had been abandoned by their superiors. The officers, the soldier told Mr. Esinosa, “left at night and they told us nothing. They left us alone here.”

Later on Wednesday, Mr. Acre reported on Twitter that a colleague had returned to the airport and said that fighting had resumed with the government forces nearby.
