Uncaged Monkeys, Hammersmith Apollo, London (Rated 3/ 5 )

Dubbed "the ugliest tour in showbiz" by Dara O Briain and a gathering for "geeks" and the "disenfranchised" by host Robin Ince, Uncaged Monkeys lets loose a live version of Radio 4's comic look at science, The Infinite Monkey Cage and follows on from Ince's similar science-minded live shows Nine Lessons and Carols for Godless People.

University of Kent's comedy module celebrates its 10th anniversary

Friday, 13 May 2011

Much has been made, and rightly so, of the prevalence of stand-ups on our screens, airwaves and stages. However, while the phenomenon seems recent the 10th anniversary of the trail-blazing stand-up comedy module of the University of Kent's Drama and Theatre Studies course reminds us that the popularisation of the art form has some history behind it, and suggests that even the post, post-alternative era is all grown-up now.

Tasty turns of phrase: Dylan Moran

Dylan Moran: Yeah, Yeah, Hexagon, Reading (Rated 4/ 5 )

Wednesday, 11 May 2011

The raffish Dylan Moran has, in recent years, dismissed those who have suggested that certain subjects should be off limits to comedy, stressing that stock targets such as the differences between men and women are there to be reinvented. He's right, of course, but watching him tonight I am very conscious of the reinvention rota that seems to have characterised his work over the last few years.

Milton Jones: The Lion Whisperer, Corn Exchange, Cambridge (Rated 3/ 5 )

Wednesday, 4 May 2011

"You didn't fancy a street party either?" quips Radio 4 favourite Milton Jones to his Cambridge audience, perhaps grateful that those who had watched the royal wedding earlier (not a majority according to his quick voice poll) had decided not to forsake punnery for pageantry. Not that an evening with Jones is slumming it; he's arguably comedy royalty after all, king of his own brand of absurd wordplay, occupying a land that borders Tim Vine's equally distinct fiefdom.

"Nothing ruins comedy like arenas," sings Tim Minchin in his opening number.
