Do Ideas Still Matter? Or Is Politics Brain Dead?

Editors of three leading political magazines–Francis Fukuyama of The American Interest, Bill Kristol of the Weekly Standard and Michael Tomasky of the liberal American Prospect–will join the founding editors of a new progressive publication in a panel discussion June 20 to mark the launch of Democracy: A Journal of Ideas. The panel will convene at 1 pm at the National Press Club, 529 14th St. NW, 13th Floor, Washington, D.C.

The panel will discuss the role of ideas in contemporary politics. Progressive ideas about activist government led to the New Deal and shaped American politics for generations. Big ideas launched by small conservative journals–from supply-side economics to the doctrine of pre-emption–re-shaped American politics and government at the turn of the new century. Today, progressives say conservative ideas are failing America. Conservatives say progressives have no new ideas. The panel will address such questions as: which side is winning the battle of ideas? What big ideas can shape politics today? Do ideas still matter in politics anyway?
