I'm a total beauty book junkie. It all started years ago, when I picked up a makeup book by the late Kevin Aucoin. I was hooked.
Now I read anything I can get my hands on -- from skin care to hair care to make your own beauty products. So I was excited to read the new book from the creators of TheBeautyBrains.com, Can You Get Hooked On Lip Balm?
The book obviously answered the title question, but also others like "do pore strips really work?" and "do dryer sheets cause acne?" Read the review of Can You Get Hooked On Lip Balm? to find out more.

April 22 is Earth Day! There are so many ways to help the environment besides recycling. In celebration of Earth Day, here are some ways you can green your acne treatment routine:
- Treat yourself to some homemade skin care products. Handmade skin care products can be just as luxurious as the store-bought kind, and makes a special eco-friendly treat for your skin.
- Take a minute or two to organize your skin care cabinet. Knowing what you have on hand saves you from purchasing a product you may not need, and makes it less likely a product will expire on you. This means less waste in a landfill (and it can save you some some money too.)
- Share your green beauty tips with others. Tell us what you do to keep yourself, and the world, beautiful. Sharing your knowledge with others will help us all to make a difference.
"Go Green" Skin Care:
Topical retinoids are often the first treatment choice for acne. Since they are only approved by the FDA for those 12 years and older, some doctors are hesitant to prescribe them for younger kids, though.
Actually, acne is not uncommon even in nine, ten, and eleven-year-olds. So, what's a preteen to do? A new study, albeit a small one, shows that topical retinoids may be appropriate acne treatments for the younger set as well.
Forty preteens, between the ages of 8-12, were treated with Retin-A Micro for 12 weeks. It worked just as well as in older teens. Side effects, like skin irritation, were minimal and could be reduced by using the medication every other day and slowly building up to every day use.
Some doctors already prescribe topical retinoids to kids younger than 12. It's not uncommon to use medications off-label like this. So this studies supports the idea that topical retinoids are a good treatment choice for preteens too.
