For Second Straight Year, Woods Walks Off Course at Players Championship

Thursday May 12, 2011
At the 2010 Players Championship, Tiger Woods withdrew during the final round. Now, it's happened again at the 2011 Players Championship.

Woods withdrew from the tournament midway through the first round, walking off TPC Sawgrass after the ninth hole - and after shooting 42 on those first nine holes - with leg injuries. The Associated Press' Doug Ferguson wrote of Woods' demeanor during those nine holes:
(Woods) constantly walked some 20 yards behind his playing partners, holding his club for support, limping more noticeable with each hole.

Woods withdrew from last week's Wells Fargo Championship a week before that tournament, citing "minor injuries" to his left knee and Achilles' tendon. After Thursday's withdrawal, Woods said he felt bad from the opening tee shot.

"... the knee acted up and then the Achilles followed after that and then the calf started cramping up," Woods said. "Everything started getting tight, so it's just a whole chain reaction."

When asked how bad the pain was, Woods replied, "I'm having a hard time walking."

Woods said the knee and Achilles had been sore on practice days, but not too bad, and that he felt OK during warmups before Thursday's round. But "then as I played, it progressively got worse."

Tiger said he was suprised at this result today - "The treatment's been good. It's been getting better" - and admitted he has some worries now.

Obviously, we'll have to wait and see what kind of prognosis Woods gets from the doctors in the coming days (if he chooses to share that information). And obviously, this is one more negative development in Woods' career, which recently has been chock full of negatives.

How worried are you about Tiger's future on the golf course? Do you foresee Woods ever regaining his former position atop the golf world, or do you think a continued decline is in store?

Gallery: TPC Sawgrass

Wednesday May 11, 2011
TPC Sawgrass is one of the most famous golf courses in the world for two reasons:

1. It's the permanent home of The Players Championship;
2. It has the Island Green, which wasn't the first island green when it was originally constructed, but quickly became the best-known.

TPC Sawgrass is, as they say about some Pete Dye courses, "dye-abolical." Take a look at TPC Sawgrass in photos.

This Week: The Players Championship

Monday May 9, 2011
Seve Ballesteros will be present in spirit this week at The Players Championship. It is tradition during tournament week that the champions' monument flagpole at TPC Sawgrass fly the flag of the defending champion's country. That should be the flag of Tim Clark's South Africa this week. But Golf World's Ron Sirak reported that Clark asked for Seve's flag to fly instead. So this week, the flag of Spain is flying over Sawgrass, in tribute to Ballesteros. Kudos to Clark.

The big news going into this week is who isn't playing: World No. 1 Lee Westwood won't be at Sawgrass, and Rory McIlroy is skipping it, too. I've always felt that eventually The Players Championship would start being counted as a major. That's the momentum, and that's the desire of the PGA Tour. But if top European Tour members begin skipping it due to USPGA-imposed playing constraints, well, forget about major championship status. Now, the momentum is another direction - in favor of a world tour (of which The Players would be a part, along with the the BMW PGA Championship, the European equivalent). By the way, Ryo Ishikawa and Miguel Angel Jimenez are two others skipping the 2011 Players.

But Matteo Manassero is playing, and he becomes, at just over 18 years old, the youngest golfer to play this tournament.

Tiger Woods is playing, after skipping last week's Wells Fargo Championship with minor injuries. And Ernie Els is playing, teeing off on Thursday three days after getting inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame (which happens Monday night). The rest of the field is as you would expect - all the rest of the best.
