Welcome back to work to those of you who celebrated the 4th of July in the U.S. yesterday. Here's hoping that there were no fireworks mishaps and we're all back with all of the fingers we went into the weekend with.
As we're getting back into the swing of work, perhaps you'd like a small distraction. If so, I've got it for you: why don't you vote in our current poll, about whether you'd buy an HDTV made by Apple that runs the iOS, apps, and includes Apple TV features?
Not a ton of news in the days leading into the 4th of July weekend here in the U.S., but there are some interesting rumblings about Apple planning to target the low-end of the cell phone market with cheap or free iPhones.
- One analyst projects that even after the release of the iPhone 5 Apple will continue to offer the iPhone 3GS, but that it will be free with a 2-year contract. Makes sense, except that I'd guess that iOS 6 will drop support for the 3GS before that 2-year contract is up, which would freeze out all those users of new features.
- Another analyst suggests that Apple might instead release a $350 contract-free phone. This one makes some sense since, according to some research, 3.7 billion people worldwide use pre-paid, contract-free phones and can't currently buy iPhones under those conditions. A phone sold this way would allow Apple to drastically increase its potential market.
- Another nail in Flash's coffin? Google releases Swiffy, a free online tool to transform Flash files into HTML5.
And that's about the news for the week. Happy 4th of July to those of you celebrating this weekend!
