Nonprofit Excellence AwardsEstablished in 2007 by the Times Company working with the Nonprofit Coordinating Committee of New York (NPCC) and the New York Regional Association of Grantmakers (NYRAG), The New York Times Company Nonprofit Excellence Awards recognize management excellence within the nonprofit sector. Nonprofits in New York City, Long Island and Westchester County are eligible to apply. Winners are chosen by a selection committee and awards are presented to up to four nonprofit organizations in June of 2009. The awards honor outstanding management practices encourage innovation among New York's large and diverse nonprofit community.
The News Literacy ProjectThe News Literacy Project is a national nonprofit program to bring active and retired journalists into middle and high schools to help students sort fact from fiction and know what to believe in the digital age. It also aspires to light a spark of interest in news that will make young people well-informed citizens and voters. The project will launch pilots in schools in New York City and Bethesda, Md. in February 2009. It is headed by Alan Miller, a Pulitzer Prize-winning former investigative reporter with the Los Angeles Times. The New York Times has endorsed the project and is a participating news organization. ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) AwardsThe purpose of this award is to recognize one teacher in New York City whose commitment to his or her students is demonstrated by consistently going “above and beyond” the call of duty to help students learn English and develop the skills needed to build successful lives in the United States.
