Updated 12:00 A.M.

WASHINGTON - Exasperated by stalled Middle East peace talks in a season of tumultuous change, President Barack Obama jolted close ally Israel Thursday by embracing the Palestinians’ terms for drawing the borders of their new nation next door. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel rejected the idea as “indefensible” on the eve of his vital White House meeting with Obama.

SOUTHBRIDGE - Sacred Heart of Jesus on Charlton Street is filled with survivors, said longtime parishioner Doris Goudreau, noting the flood that hit the neighborhood in 1955. But even with that resilience, the 103-year-old Catholic church couldn’t withstand a dwindling and aging membership. (T&G;)

OPINION

On November 2, 2010, I was elected to serve on the Governor’s Council for the 7th District. The Governor’s Council was created by John Adams, Samuel Adams and other Founding Fathers to be a check on the power of the Massachusetts governor. Our founders believed the need for checks and balances so important to our system of government that they made the Governor’s Council a constitutional office in the commonwealth. The council may be even more relevant today because Massachusetts is a one-party state, which lacks checks and balances. (T&G;)

The ratification of a new contract between St. Vincent Hospital and its nurses is welcome confirmation of the tentative deal struck earlier this month that averted a one-day strike. The contract, which contains some language on staffing ratios and gives nurses 1 percent raises in two consecutive years, is probably best described as middle ground, far from the territory described in the fiery rhetoric coming from the Massachusetts Nurses Association.
