How is U of T research funded? U of T spends more than $3 million per day on research across all disciplines. Individual researchers (or teams of researchers) apply for funding from a variety of sources and at any one time might have several grants supporting their work. Occasionally, researchers win special prizes or awards that come with monetary compensation.

Indirect Costs
For every research dollar received, U of T spends 50 cents on the indirect costs of research—everything from keeping the lights on in labs to paying the salaries of administrators who make sure that the research meets ethical standards.
