Home Staging Surprise: Emerald Green Shrink Wrap

home stagingOne look at the well-trimmed landscaping and welcoming brick facade of this three-bedroom Houston home, and you may wonder why it's still on the market. But take a gander inside and ... whoa! Little green pod people everywhere!

No, wait. It's just green cellophane -- yards and yards of the stuff -- wrapped around practically every piece of furniture in the house.

Where exactly in the home staging manual does it suggest outfitting your antique grandfather clock to look like Gumby? It's a shame, too, because at $119,500, this nearly 2,500-square-foot home offers a lot of house and plenty of neat features.

"I didn't realize it would catch anyone's attention," the listing agent, Linda Brewer, said with a chuckle.

It turns out that the seller is getting ready to put many of the home furnishings in storage, and the Martian-colored shrink-wrap is just the first step in the process, Brewer told AOL Real Estate.

Not to say that there's anything wrong with the house. On the contrary, it's the sparkly-green accent that stopped us in our tracks when we first saw it on Curbed. So maybe there's something to be said for wrapping your home in neon Saran before listing it on the market.

In any event, if you're tempted to follow suit, read our home staging guides for practical advice:

Wrapping furniture in green plastic film--this is a story that , presumably, someone gets paid to write? Or worse; writes for nothing because of too much time on his hands. Maybe we can get another story about wrapping furniture in pink film. Idle fingers, you know.

How stupid! Its obvious the owner is moving out! If you're that dumb then maybe you shouldnt be buying a house. You will end up being the next foreclosure!

What are you buying anyway the building or the furnishings? I would suggest to the seller to dump the real estate agent for another ASAP. They can't sell a home so they blame it on shrink wrap and the owners furnature, DUMP THEM !

Why did the agent use those pictures as the listing photos to begin with? Most people DO look at the furniture and accessories in the house - that's what draws them in to really check the place out. Otherwise, it's just 4 walls. The majority of buyers look online for the homes they want to view. If the photos don't show a nice home, buyers won't add it to their list of homes to see. By using these pictures, the agent lost out on a slew of potential buyers even coming to see it. However, now that this article is out there, they may get some additional interest.

That house has zero curb appeal (it's butt ugli) and the kitchen layout is a disaster, what kind of drug addict puts a sink in front of the pass-through... and has no kitchen window.

anyone who goes into a home to buy and needs to see it staged, or the right colors, should not be looking at homes to begin with..... Whats wrong with these people, have Mommie and Daddy given them so much that all they can see if the finished product and not the potential... really said to see so many lazy people today..

Believe it or not folks, when selling your home the ignorant people come out of the woodwork. When I sold my condo I got comments on it like it stinks, after I washed the floor with Lysol. The color of the walls was ugly. The wallpaper was too old fashion. It was dirty or dusty, after I had moved out and scrubbed the place clean. I don't like the bottom floor condo, when it was listed as a first floor unit. It was unbelievable the nasty comments you get. I think some of it was out of pure jealousy, because I had come down in the price to rock bottom and refused to come down even farther. For me I was looking at the design of the house, not the furniture or the wallpaper or paint. That can be changed. Just ridiculous.

Why should the furniture - shrink wrapped or not be a problem in selling a house. If you are selling the furniture then yeah it's a problem. I look at room layout, size, traffic flow, etc. Some people just want to find fault with everything anyway so why not say, well, we don't like the green furntiture so we don't like the house. Give me a break

when i buy a house, i'm not looking at the furniture nor the paint job... that's nonsense... look at the foundation and the roof and things that actually matter... if someone gets turned off by sran wrap, then that person has issues...
