Program Description:
The Georgetown University Certificate in Budget and Finance provides professionals with the fundamentals of financial management.  Program participants will develop skills in accounting, operational and capital budgeting, and corporate financial management.

Taught by Georgetown University faculty and experienced practioners, participants will learn the language of finance, to analyze costs, and the art of presenting budgets for approval.  Participants will quickly be able to apply new cost management, budget analysis and risk assessment skills in the workplace.

Overview:
The Certificate in Budget and Finance offers two tracks: (1) Corporate and (2) Government. Private or non-profit sector professionals should select electives related to corporate finance while federal employees should select courses relevant to government budgeting and appropriations. Contractors and consultants with both corporate and government clients may select a mix of electives.

  • Professionals without a background in finance and accounting
  • Science and technology workers who seek senior management positions
  • Professionals who want to transition to financial management roles 
  • Business school applicants who want an introduction to finance and accounting
  • Entrepreneurs who need a better understanding of finance 
  • Professionals who want to refresh or update their finance and budgeting skills

Objectives:
Program participants will:

  • Interpret financial information
  • Apply ratio and trend analysis to financial statements
  • Assess the costs and benefits of business decisions
  • Develop operational budgets and apply cost management techniques
  • Apply risk and return considerations in capital budgeting
  • Understand the federal budgeting process
  • Communicate operational and financial strategies to non-financial stakeholders

Program Requirements:

  • Successful completion of six courses (4 required and two elective). Some courses meet weeknights and others meet Saturdays.  Refer to individual course pages for schedules.
  • Students must complete the program within a two-year time period.

Prerequisites:

  • A bachelor's degree or the equivalent. 
  • A TOEFL examination for non-native speakers of English is not required but students are expected to read, write and comprehend English at the graduate level to fully participate in and gain from the program.
  • Any requests for exceptions to these requirements must be made in writing to the program director at CCPE.
