MAY 23, 2011 – A PROFESSOR AND FORMER associate dean at Harvard Business School – David A. Thomas – will serve as the new dean of Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business, effective August 1.
The new dean currently serves as the H. Naylor Fitzhugh Professor of Business Administration at Harvard and directs the school’s Organizational Behavior Unit.
THOUGHT LEADER
“A recognized thought leader in the area of strategic human resource management, David brings important academic and organizational leadership to his new role at Georgetown,” says Georgetown President John J. DeGioia. “I very much look forward to our work together to expand upon our existing strengths in research and teaching to respond to the changes and challenges of the 21st century.”
Located at the center of world politics and business in Washington, D.C., the McDonough School of Business offers undergraduate, MBA and executive education with an intensive focus on fostering leadership and a global perspective.
AMAZING INSTITUTION
“I am honored and humbled to be entrusted with the leadership of the McDonough School of Business at Georgetown University,” says Thomas, who will also hold the William R. Berkley Chair at the McDonough School of Business. “I hope to work with the faculty and other members of the community to continue the tradition of groundbreaking research and teaching excellence that is bringing it to preeminence among the world’s leading business schools.”
The professor’s own research focuses on issues related to executive development, cultural diversity in organizations, leadership and organizational change, and has made numerous contributions during his tenure at Harvard, where he has served on the faculty since 1990.
Thomas also served as senior associate dean and director of faculty recruitment at Harvard from 2005 to 2008, and led its business school’s required first-year MBA course, Leadership and Organizational Behavior.
PRESTIGIOUS PAST
Thomas served as faculty chair for Harvard Business School’s Executive Education Program. Prior to joining the faculty at Harvard, he was a professor at the Wharton School of Finance at the University of Pennsylvania.
In addition to being widely published, Thomas has been recognized with a number of prestigious awards, including the Executive Development Roundtable’s Marion Gislaison Award for Contributions to Executive Development Theory and Practice.
He also received the Administrative Science Quarterly Scholarly Contribution Award for the article that had the most impact on the field in the last five years, “Cultural Diversity at Work,” with Robin Ely.
OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTION
And the Academy of Management presented him with the George R. Terry Award for the most outstanding contribution to the advancement of management knowledge for Breaking Through: The Making of Minority Executives in Corporate America (Harvard Business Press, June 1999).
Thomas received his bachelor of arts in administrative sciences and master and doctor of philosophy degrees in organizational behavior from Yale University. He also holds a master of arts in organizational psychology from Columbia University.
