elghriba_synagogue190511DJERBA (TAP) - "This year, the Ghriba pilgrimage, performed each year by the Jewish community on the Djerba Island, will only last two days, instead of the usual week, and with no festivities," Mr. Perez Trabelsi, the Ghriba Committee Chairman, told TAP correspondent.

He explained that shortening of the Ghriba pilgrimage and cancellation of festivities are due to the exceptional situation Tunisia is living through and are also a token of respect for the Revolution martyrs.

Jews residing in Tunisia and a small number of Tunisian Jews living in France are expected to take part in this year's Ghriba pilgrimage.

Announcement of the cancellation of these festivities did not arouse negative reactions within the Jewish community, convinced as they are, according to Mr. Perez Trabelsi, of the exceptional situation experienced by Tunisia, "a country of tolerance, dialogue and co-existence of religions and civilisations," he added.

He expressed hope that the Ghriba pilgrimage will be celebrated next year under its usual form and in a peaceful and stable atmosphere.
