About the Office of Communications

Georgetown University's Office of Communications, a division of the Office of Public Affairs and Strategic Development, represents and promotes the university and its faculty, students, programs and policies to a variety of internal and external constituents. The office provides strategic communications consultation, media relations  efforts, strategic Web communications and event planning services on behalf of Georgetown University, its faculty, administrators, academic programs and staff, and coordinates activities to promote Georgetown officials and expertise to internal and external constituencies.

Our office is also available to assist with publicity efforts for the university. We draft press releases, media advisories, fact sheets, op-eds and other materials to publicize news from faculty research and/or the university. We promote stories to reporters and distribute information to news organizations in Washington, D.C. and throughout the world. National and international television networks, including C-Span, CNN, BBC and major print and electronic media outlets including the New York Times, Washington Post, Associated Press and The Chronicle of Higher Education frequently cover research and events at Georgetown and look to the University's community of scholars for expert opinion.

Georgetown University faculty experts are encouraged to be listed as a faculty expert for the media. Please contact us if you would like assistance in preparing for media interviews or training on what to do when the media calls.

Our professional staff stand ready to assist and advise all members of the university community. You can contact us by calling 202.687.4328 or e-mailing gucomm@georgetown.edu.

The Office of Communications can assist university departments and media organization's in capturing or covering events and interviewing our faculty using a range of audio and video services.

In order to recognize students for their hard work and dedication, we distribute press releases to their hometown newspapers. Many newspapers will print the stories as part of their coverage of news about local residents.

Event Planning

The Office of Protocol and Events is responsible for coordinating events involving dignitaries visiting campus including heads of state, cabinet members, international leaders, celebrities and other public officials. Events of this magnitude often require specific protocol and security arrangements to be made between the university and other entities. Depending on the nature of the event, our office assists and advises on: event coordination, logistics and security, protocol and cultural issues, webcasting capabilities and program concept design and production.

Please contact our office at (202) 687.4328 to make sure all appropriate policies and procedures are followed.
