Yves Saint Laurent Goes Nautical for Resorthttp://www.huffingtonpost.com/ellie-krupnick/yves-saint-laurent-resort-show_b_869757.htmlEllie Krupnickhttp://www.huffingtonpost.com/ellie-krupnick/
It was all about red, white and blue at Yves Saint Laurent's Resort 2012 show, with a little gold and black thrown in for good measure. Designer Stefano Pilati showed his summery cruise collection in a chic space atop a midtown Manhattan skyscraper as the fashion elite, including Vogue's Hamish Bowles and editors from Harper's Bazaar, Marie Claire and Elle, as well as YSL fan and "The Hurt Locker" director Kathryn Bigelow, watched.

The collection was a jaunty, if a bit heavy-handed, trip to the seaside, with navy stripes, crisp cotton, vivid crimson leather and a few ship anchors popping up here and there (as a print on shorts, for example). Although the theme and color scheme was limited, the variety of silhouettes weren't, spanning trim day looks, like a slim red trench accented with gold buttons, and flowing dresses with subtle floral prints that were perfect for a night on the beach.

Some of the looks were quite buttoned-up (unsurprising from Mr. Pilati), but I adored most the swingy striped trapeze dress donned by none other than model-of-the-moment Lindsey Wixson, which was paired with a tangle of beads and flowers around her neck. As the temperature rises, it's that kind of easy, breezy summer fashion we're looking for.
Marshall Fine: HuffPost Review: L'Amour Fou http://www.huffingtonpost.com/marshall-fine/huffpost-review-ilamour-f_b_862940.htmlMarshall Finehttp://www.huffingtonpost.com/marshall-fine/
I think fashion is silly. Not just silly -- ridiculous. When it comes to Fashion Week and all the hoopla surrounding it, I'm of the Hans Christian Anderson school: It's all The Emperor's New Clothes.

So I found the clothing and design part of L'amour fou, an intriguing documentary about Yves Saint Laurent and his longtime partner Pierre Berge that's now in limited release, to be less interesting than filmmaker Pierre Thoretton's framing device: Berge's oversight of the disposal of his and Saint Laurent's massive collection of art and antiques and the story of Saint Laurent's struggles over the years with depression, alcohol and drugs.

Well, OK -- there were a handful of fashions that made me think: I see where this became something that women everywhere wore. More often, I thought what I always think when I see the runway circus at a fashion show: Who would ever actually wear that crap?

Yes, I know -- it's not fashion, it's art. That doesn't mean there's not a level of charlatanism involved or that parts of the press and fashion world aren't being hoodwinked into touting this silliness as somehow relevant to people's lives.

So what makes Thoretton's documentary interesting is less the clothes than the relationship between Berge and Saint Laurent -- as a lover, a partner and the guiding business mind behind Saint Laurent's rise to the top of the fashion world. It's a relationship that seems both mutually beneficial and mutually fulfilling.

Still, the archival footage is pretty standard stuff. What's particularly compelling is the footage Thoretton shot of Berge surveying the massive collection he and Saint Laurent accumulated in a number of houses and apartments in France. He speaks very pragmatically, noting that, to him, they are simply things, not sources of sentimental value. Saint Laurent, he notes, could never have packed them all up and shipped them off to an auction house. But Berge does it without batting an eye.

Then he watches as they're auctioned off for literally millions of dollars and euros -- one after another. It's testament to their taste, to their vision and to their wealth. Berge emerges as a caring but unsentimental man whose life obviously has changed, now that Saint Laurent is dead.

If anything, his seemingly serene lack of complicated emotions explains how he kept the relationship with the turbulent, depressive Saint Laurent going for almost 50 years. And that seems the opposite of what the title of L'amour fou means, which is an obsessive passion.
Faith Hope Consolo: The Faithful Shopper: Top Trends for 2011http://www.huffingtonpost.com/faith-hope-consolo/the-faithful-shopper-top-_b_856457.htmlFaith Hope Consolohttp://www.huffingtonpost.com/faith-hope-consolo/
When you visit as many stores as I do (note to accountant -- it's retail research, not shopping), you begin to see patterns and trends emerging, and New York this year is no exception. Our most global of cities is becoming more so, with retail entries from new and exotic areas, while quality shopping is more affordable than ever.

Following are some trends I'm seeing this year, and stores that typify them. Some of these will be coming soon, so keep an eye out for their opening dates!

Going Global
New York has always been the major location for designers/retailers/stores coming from Europe. Now, however, we're becoming a headquarters for retailers from new and exciting markets in Asia, Africa and South America. Try some of these stores and feel as though you've entered another world.

India Soigne K - 717 Madison Avenue
Opened by the jewelry designer Soigné Kothari and devoted to designers from India. This first outpost in the United States offering both modern and traditional clothing from haute couture designers, as well as stunning jewelry, and a second-floor level to die for. Upstairs is where Kothari houses all her showstoppers, lavishly embellished one-of-kind pieces by the likes of renowned designer Tarun Tahiliani, who created the stunning red sari Liz Hurley wore to wed textile mogul Arun Nayar.

Africa Rain Africa - 59 West 49th Street
Shop Rockefeller Center and experience the tranquil atmosphere and delectable bath and body products, handmade in Africa.

Argentina Valeria Smith - 85 Mercer Street
This Buenos Aires-born handbag designer was trained as a graphic artist, and it shows. Her combinations of colors, textures and shapes are unique.

Deep Discounts
The ultra-luxury boutiques may get the bulk of the attention in magazines, newspapers, and a number of blogs (not this one, of course). But New York is also a bargain heaven, and never more so than now.

Century 21 - 22 Cortlandt Street
With top designers at up to 65% off retail, this department store has become a legend in the Financial District, Brooklyn, Queens, Long Island and New Jersey. Coming in the fall: a location near Lincoln Square. Consider this the Barney's of discount.

Target - 517 East 117th Street
After opening units in Brooklyn and Queens, the great suburban discounter is now in East Harlem, offering stylish clothing and housewares, as well as electronics, at great prices.
These sister stores (both divisions of TJX Cos.) offer better and even some designer merchandise well below retail prices. Two of my favorite places for leather bags. Why should the suburbs have all the fun?

Walmart - Check the latest rumors.
Coming someday. We're waiting, Bentonville!

Powerful Pop-ups
What was a terrific business strategy for landlords to fill storefronts during the recession has become a long-term plan for many retailers and designers to test locations and concepts. Their temporary nature means that if you blink, you'll miss them -- and they may not be easy to find. But check local neighborhood papers and websites, and find something new. Open now or soon are:
Different collections -- of bags, hats and lights -- began earlier this month and available for a two-week period through June 30.

Renewed Boutiques
Even the most venerated stores have to stay up to date, and we've seen a flurry of renovations and relocations in the last year or two. And expect more as the economic recovery leads more businesses to spiff up!

After closing a while back at Madison and 61st, this boutique is moving 10 blocks uptown.

Great Outdoors
We New Yorkers seem to crave the opportunity to escape to nature every so often, and now have never had more options to purchase the gear and clothing we need. Look for everything from luggage to kayaks to shoes at some of these stores.

Cheap Chic
Coming from Europe, and shortly from Japan, these stores have been offering us the opportunity for trendy fashion at a price that won't hurt the bank -- or leave regrets at the end of the season.

Bill Cunningham Documentary: High Fashion In Plain Clotheshttp://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/04/15/bill-cunningham-new-york_n_849663.htmlThe Huffington Post News Teamhttp://www.huffingtonpost.com/the-news/
When I worked at the New York Times I saw Mr. Cunningham now and again around the office. We never spoke, because he didn’t know me and I didn’t dress well, but on occasion we shared an elevator, or a smile and a nod. I found this joint history reason enough to see the film "Bill Cunningham New York." And with documentary festival laurels from Nantucket, New York, Melbourne, Sydney, Canberra, and Abu Dhabi, it promised cultural nutrition, if not a good car chase or a broken heart.

Certainly, outside of the fashion world, few people know all that much about the 80-something-year-old who has for decades run around the streets and galas of the city taking photographs of people’s clothes. Inside New York, of course, and inside the self-selecting economy of those society boldfacers who spend their tipsy evenings sucking in their cheeks and elbowing each other out of photographers’ frames, to suggest that Bill Cunningham might not be of ubiquitous acclaim would be sacrilege.

Providing insight into the man’s work are scenes with Anna Wintour, propped regally in a cream-colored armchair, a dapper Tom Wolfe, David Rockefeller and Brooke Astor, when she was alive; we see inside the gilded benefits, the diamonds at the necks of the upper-upper-crust. Ambiguously gendered aspirants, with kohled eyes and perfect legs, swoon on the street for the chance to be acknowledged by one man’s lens.

“We all get dressed for Bill,” says Wintour, whose hair, even on the big screen, achieves the inanimate perfection of a natural history diorama.

However. To my left, the other night at the IFC Center, sat a young couple about whom I made an immediate, non-scientific, and extremely biased presumption: That she, rather than he, had dictated the choice of this evening’s show. He wore jeans and a lumberjack shirt. He had a thin mustache and his hair in a ponytail, and the moment after the theater lights dimmed, he crossed his arms about his chest as if to say: “Let’s get this over with.”

Bill Cunningham seemed a funny little subject. Outside of his work, a brilliant splash of color on full pages in the Times, he does not look a bit like a kingmaker. Small of body and old as the hills, he rides the streets on a bicycle with a camera around his neck. He wears the same blue jackets that French street workers wear, and when his rain poncho rips, he mends it with tape.

He smiles a cheeky smile, develops film at a neighborhood store, and sorts through rolls of negatives rather than digital files. He attends church weekly, calls everyone “child,” and for many decades lived in a matchbox of a studio above Carnegie Hall.

And he loves nothing more than finding strangers to photograph, be they haute couture or civilian. His favorite fashion shows have always been the streets.

The best storytelling contains a moment when something essential breaks open, and within it we see something true. If it’s done right, it enriches both the subject, and its audience—however varied.

It happened behind a podium at an award ceremony in France. Cunningham, awarded by the nation to receive the honor of Chevalier dans l’ordre des Arts et des Lettres, could hardly keep still at his own party—by nature he is not a guest. As with any other gala, he dressed for work and shot photographs of the clothes he found lovely.

When he finally took the stage to accept the title, a medal newly pinned to his scruffy lapel, he spoke a little in English and a little in French. He didn’t say much until, suddenly, his voice faltered. “It is as true today as it ever was,” he said, and then he began to sob: “He who seeks beauty will find it." The theater fell silent. And beside me the lumberjack wept.

Get ready for FNO 2.0.

The third Fashion's Night Out, to be held September 8, will include e-tailers, meaning you can participate in Vogue, the Council of Fashion Designers of America, NYC & Company, and the City of New York's huge shopping event from the comfort of your own home. Why didn't we think of that sooner?

So far, Polyvore has signed on to showcase different online stores and will enlist Vogue editors and celeb fashionistas to create their own looks to inspire potential FNO shoppers.

But that's not all -- what would any sort of clothing-related fete be without the merch? Shoppers eager to get into the sartorial spirit can purchase long-and short-sleeved t-shirts, baseball caps and tote bags at fashionsnightout.com.
We're here to offer a cautionary tale of what happens when you violate the basic rules of buying from what we call "The Flash Sale Mob."

In order to write about and report on sites like Gilt Groupe and Groupon, we need to cruise them and it's tricky-hard to mind your dollars and sense while spending hours immersed in checking out seductive goodies. Inevitably, this leads to the 'oy, what was I thinking' brand of buyer's remorse. While we have an excuse -- hey, it's an occupational hazard -- we're sharing our rules (and transgressions) so you don't get into hurry-hurry-click-and-buy-it trouble.

Rule #1

Buy only things you are already in the market for and can return.

Rule #2

Buy a service only if you have tried it (or at least had a trusted friend tell you it is a must-do).

Rule #3

Read the fine print.

Violation of Rule #1: Non-returnable Item

A set of new placemats and napkins. Some people have shoe obsessions, others handbags, still others naughty lingerie. Us? Nothing so sexy. We're suckers for anything that has to do with setting the table. (No one should be surprised -- there's food involved in this equation.) Anyway, we saw a handsome set of grey placemats from a reputable French linen maker. We're having a fancy wine dinner and thought, hm, since we're saving a bundle by having everyone else bring fantastic wines in exchange for our cooking -- why not put it into great linen? (Yes, we think in twisted ways sometimes.) Perhaps it was punishment, because when we opened the package we were disappointed in the quality of the placemats. They were thinner and lighter than the goods this maker normally manufactures.

Violation of Rule #2: Un-vetted Service Provider

Of course we're savvy enough to not bite on the massage being offered by Dan's Teeth Whitening, Botox, Spa and Grooming Salon. You know the one stop fill'er up, bleach 'em and wash the dog place that is in a town you passed once on the highway. But, when we saw a deal for 60% off a massage at a place that was just a block away, we clicked. (Hey, we're stressed out, the deadline for our new manuscript is weeks away.) Well, we didn't get past taking our shoes off before we decided there were better ways to get bedbugs or be seen on a live stream Girls Girls Girls video in some creeps basement. Awkwardly, we made some excuse about a forgotten pot of soup and a lit burner and fled.

Violation of Rule #3: Didn't Read the Fine Print

This one was really a good deal, honest, half-price tickets to Darko Tresnjak's Merchant of Venice. The only problem is we neglected to read the fine print. Unlike, most online tickets that you buy and print out, this one required us to print the voucher and take it to the box office days ahead of the scheduled performance to redeem it for real tickets. Totally our fault. We ended up scrambling on the day of the performance to redeem the voucher and got the worst seats in the house. Great play. Lousy seats. Impossible acoustics.

The moral of the story? Follow the rules.
Lisa Mirza Grotts: Dressed for Success: Style vs. Trendshttp://www.huffingtonpost.com/lisa-mirza-grotts/dressed-for-success-style_b_841247.htmlLisa Mirza Grottshttp://www.huffingtonpost.com/lisa-mirza-grotts/
There's a reason Emily Post wrote the book on manners. She said, "The woman who is chic is always a little different, Not different in being behind fashion, but always slightly apart from it."

Of the over one hundred etiquette subjects I have taught, dress and etiquette are always in the top ten. Dressing is not like setting the table, where rules rule. Are there rules for dress? You bet, but there's a lot more freedom of style.

It all comes down to style vs. trends. If you have your own style, then you know what you like when you walk into a boutique or department store. If you use a personal shopper, they should also know your style, which can be a great time saver.

Do you consider yourself a trendsetter or follower? Elizabeth Varnell, style editor of San Francisco magazine, says, "Following trends is a monetary preoccupation; cultivating style is a lifelong process."

Rules That Matter
Casual Friday means dressing casually, not dressing sloppily. This means no shorts, no jeans (torn or otherwise), or T-shirts. For men, it means khakis and polo shirts. For women, it means casual skirts, slacks and dresses, polo shirts or blouses.

Cocktail Attire is a confusing term that sends many people into wardrobe frenzy. For men, it means a dark suit with a tie, or slacks and a sports coat with a tie. For women, a dressy skirt and blouse, a cocktail dress, or a pants suit.

Black Tie is the dress for formal evening events. For men, this means a tuxedo; for women, it means a long or short evening dress (yes, short is okay).

For the most formal evening events, men should wear a white tie and tails, while women should wear a full-length gown.

General Rules of Dress
It's important to wear clothes that are appropriate to the occasion. It's a great insult to appear casually dressed when a host has made a great effort to put on an elegant party for you and other guests. Plus, it can be embarrassing for you both.

If an invitation does not specify dress, you have every right to ask what is expected when you respond to the invitation.

The Golden Rule is that it's better to be overdressed than underdressed.

Why then is dressing for success difficult for many? Let's apply my favorite rule: less is definitely more. Less means you wear a strapless dress with chandelier earrings and skip the necklace. More means leaving the necklace on. Do you or your jewelry wish to be noticed? If the answer is the latter, then by all means wear what you wish, but remember: The way a woman wears a certain something makes the fashion, not the opposite.

Style is something you're born with. Personal shoppers may be able to make someone stop wearing black socks with tennis shoes and teach them that loafers must always be worn sockless, even in the dead of winter. But developing an attractive personal style is another matter. If you are one to follow color trends, then this spring we will see you in yellow (a tough color by all accounts, for both clothes and home décor) and fingerless gloves, which allow you to use your iPad. Note to reader: I would rather wear Kelly green leather gloves and take them off to send a text. It's my own style, not somebody else's.

Take the comment on fashion vs. style from style icon Joy Venturini Bianchi of San Francisco's Helpers House of Couture, which benefits the developmentally disabled: "Currently, we are inundated by images in magazines, television programs, and events that are devoted to fashion. Most of the images are advertisements for 'Who you might become,' 'Who you should become,' or 'Who you will never be.' The fashion industry promises to help you find an "instant" identity that you can display to the world. This is fashion as image. Style is a different thing altogether. To develop it, you have to give up the idea that you will find yourself in images of other people. You have to engage in the process of finding out who you really are--from the inside out. When you do this, you begin to discover that certain fashions allow "the best of you" to be seen, while expressing your own taste, not that of others. The more you discover your own real self, the more you will find the fashions that suit you, and the more you will develop your own style."

Susan Graf of Susan Graf Limited in Healdsburg, California (www.susangraf.com) adds that clothes must flatter at any age. Her exclusive Bogner Techno Pant (better known as the Little Black Dress of Trousers) both fit and flatter. "They are sleek and modern with a minimalist presence, an iconic trouser and staple around which every wardrobe revolves."

Emily Post's words echo those of my fashion idol, Coco Chanel: "Fashions fade; style is eternal."
Japan Fashion Week Canceledhttp://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/03/15/japan-fashion-week-canceled_n_835831.htmlThe Huffington Post News Teamhttp://www.huffingtonpost.com/the-news/
Japan Fashion Week has unsurprisingly been canceled following the disastrous events in the country, Women's Wear Daily reports. The event was supposed to take place March 21 to 25, but several brands had already called off their shows or postponed indefinitely.

A statement on the Fashion Week website reads as follows:

Our heartfelt regrets go to those individuals who were affected by the disaster of the Eastern Japan Earthquake.

Due to the multiple concerns regarding current electricity shortages, unreliable transportation, and general safety concerns, the "Japan Fashion Week in Tokyo" that was scheduled to take place this week and next week has been cancelled.

Consequently, the Tokyo Collection Week that was scheduled to take place next week has also been cancelled. Fashion companies work hard to maintain and expand their business connections, and JFW considers it its duty to support their efforts. Since conditions in each of their source areas vary greatly so does their rate of production. However, despite these difficult times, we will continue to try our best to obtain the products we can so that we may put together exhibitions to showcase them.

JFW will take these necessary measures and organize exhibitions by communicating closely with each company to determine a concrete support strategy that may be put it into effect. Regarding the contents of the collection, we also intend to make the collection available on the web as a means to not only provide more opportunities for business connections but also so that it may act as a source for information. For more details, please check our JFW's official website.

Despite this unprecedented national disaster, we will do whatever we can to keep the business flame burning in order to promote new fashion business, and we deeply appreciate your understanding and support.

Among the labels that had planned to participate: Gut's Dynamite Cabarets, Somarta, Junya Tashiro, beautiful people, Yoshio Kubo, Ne-Net and Etw.Vonneguet.

Kanye West Tries, Fails To Crash McQueen Showhttp://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/03/10/kanye-west-tries-fails-to_n_834222.htmlThe Huffington Post News Teamhttp://www.huffingtonpost.com/the-news/
It seems that aspiring fashionista Kanye West had some trouble nabbing front row seats at Paris' hottest shows. Page Six reports that the rapper turned up at McQueen without being invited. And then -- shock! -- he wasn't let in.

The gossip column reached out to PR firm KCD and a rep said, "Mr. West requested to attend [the Balmain show] and we let him know we would not be able to accommodate him. He chose to come to the door anyway and we kindly let him know we could not accommodate him."

Kanye supposedly pulled a similar stunt at Balmain, but was ultimately welcomed through "a side entrance by 'venue management, not through the front door,'" another rep explains and Page Six writes.

West was also missing from the Louis Vuitton show, but sources said he didn't ask for an invite. So there.
PHOTOS: Did Valentino Play It Too Safe?http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/03/10/valentino-fall-winter-2011_n_833948.htmlThe Huffington Post News Teamhttp://www.huffingtonpost.com/the-news/
Paris Fashion Week might have ended on Thursday, but we're still catching up on what came down the runway. Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Picciolo showed their latest collection for Valentino on Wednesday evening, full of delicate dresses, tailored coats and sweaters ripe for fall.

From the Women's Wear Daily report:

Chiuri and Piccioli introduced deeper colors, like navy and oxblood on rich fur coats and trim leather trenches. Then came lighter fare in sheer silk tops, filmy pleated skirts and long, slim gowns that flaunted the atelier's prized couture effects -- lace, chiaroscuro and flower appliqués.

There's no question it was beautiful, and also a bit safe. But there's a case to be made for consistency.

The L.A. Times sang the same tune, with Booth Moore writing, "Much of it was very pretty, but the edginess that typically takes Chiuri and Piccioli's collections to a modern place was missing."

And then there was this from Cathy Horyn:

From Valentino, you see a trim collection of suits and coats in beige double-faced cashmere with gold studs arranged in neat rows, geometric plays of lace and leather, and limpid evening dresses in such pale, blurry prints that you feel you have been given Ambien.

Ambien, eh? Well, we guess that can be taken as a jab or a compliment.

Take a look and tell us what you think. You'll probably be seeing the looks on a red carpet near you soonly.
Norma Kamali: Made in the USAhttp://www.huffingtonpost.com/norma-kamali/made-in-the-usa_b_833219.htmlNorma Kamalihttp://www.huffingtonpost.com/norma-kamali/
New technology and fashion are benefited by a fast turnaround on products.

Five years ago, I designed brand labels that said, "Made in the USA Norma Kamali."

A fast turnaround on production is in sync with the growth of my online business. With more people shopping online, we are able to judge the success of a style soon after it is presented on our website.

We send a microsite blast to our clients, and their response to it allows us to see if a style needs replenishment. We are able to restock, with good planning, in a very short time. When a new collection is shown at Fashion Week, people want what they see and they want it now. The most modern clothes are those that you can wear year-round, day and night, and a good portion of those types of clothes are represented in my collection.

We have an advantage by making our products in the USA, meaning we are able to ship a week after the collection is shown.

"Made in the USA" is a proud label in my collection. Join me in training Americans to develop and create our products and helping to find a way to make our products domestically.

During my recent trip to China, I learned how hungry the Chinese people are for "Made in the USA" labels. Let's be good global neighbors and provide the world with wonderful products that say "Made in the USA."

Louis Vuitton Fall/Winter 2011: Kate Moss Closes The Show (PHOTOS)http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/03/09/louis-vuitton-fall-winter-2011-kate-moss-_n_833336.htmlThe Huffington Post News Teamhttp://www.huffingtonpost.com/the-news/
'Twas French maids and bellhops on the catwalk at Paris Fashion Week on Wednesday morning as Marc Jacobs opened Hotel Louis Vuitton -- with the help of some supermodel friends. Kate Moss made a triumphant return to the runway, closing out the show, and also on-hand were Amber Valletta, Carmen Kass, Carolyn Murphy, Stella Tennant and Naomi Campbell...each one arriving in an old-fashioned elevator for her turn.

From the AP report:

Hourglass shaped coats in tweed and slick patent leather were worn with thigh-high stockings - and nothing else. Black bustiers were layered over demure A-line skirts worn with shirts with round white collars. A black dress embroidered with sequins looked innocent enough until the model turned the corner, revealing her handcuff-bound wrists.

Superstar designer Marc Jacobs said the public's insatiable desire for everything with the LV logo sparked the idea for the collection.

"There's this crazy, almost irrational desire for these objects, these things we create," Jacobs told a scrum of journalists in a frenzied backstage interview.

"We were thinking about obsession, fetishism and we thought about an old hotel, with its chambermaids and the affairs that go on there, the crimes and scandals. And we just wanted to reveal all the amazing creatures who passed through there," he said.

PHOTOS: McQueen Turns Out Royal Wedding-Worthy Collectionhttp://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/03/08/mcqueen-fall-winter-2011-sarah-burton-royal-wedding_n_833159.htmlThe Huffington Post News Teamhttp://www.huffingtonpost.com/the-news/
Sarah Burton didn't do much on Tuesday to disuade the fashion community from thinking that she's designing Kate Middleton's wedding dress.

Sure, when asked over the weekend, the McQueen designer explicitly told Vogue UK, "I am not doing it," but after sending a series of full, white frocks strutting at her runway show in Paris, it seems everyone is rooting for her. After seeing the collection Hilary Alexander Tweeted, "Alexander McQueen.. Fit for.a Queen," Joe Zee: "Kate Middleton, I love you but if you don't have Sarah Burton design your wedding dress, you're making a big mistake. HUGE," Anne Slowey: "LIFT OFF AT McQUEEN!!!! Kate Middleton: HELLOOOOO!!!!" and Meenal Mistry: "Honestly, I don't really understand why Sarah Burton at #McQueen making Kate Middleton's dress isn't a foregone conclusion."

Alack and alas, it's all just speculation. But royal wedding rumors aside, there's not much that can stop us from fawning over Burton's exquisite gowns, outrageous footwear and barrette-bedecked models.

Anisha Lakhani: Stephanie Winston Wolkoff's Wonderland: NYFW 2011 Reflections and Fashion at Lincoln Center Projectionshttp://www.huffingtonpost.com/anisha-lakhani/stephanie-winston-wolkoff_b_832741.htmlAnisha Lakhanihttp://www.huffingtonpost.com/anisha-lakhani/
In the wake of the formidable, frenzied NYFW 2011, the fashion community is allowed a momentary pause to... exhale. Even Stephanie Winston Wolkoff, Director of Fashion and self-professed "Switzerland" in her role as neutral liaison between the fashion industry and Lincoln Center, relaxes her neutral stance to share some personal highlights and favorite looks from the Fall 2011 collections. She's widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in the fashion industry - handpicked and admired by Anna Wintour - with over a decade's experience as Vogue's Special Events Director; Lincoln Center president Reynold Levy knew only the woman behind the Met Gala could revolutionize Lincoln Center. She does. Every day. Stephanie's fashion week reflection, therefore, is an aberration as well as a veritable knighting ceremony; newcomers will be inducted into the realms of fashion royalty and fashion icons further cemented in their thrones.

My shih tzu puppy, Luigi Maestro, will not stop barking.

I can't hear a word and cringe inwardly before awkwardly requesting a replay. "I love dogs," Stephanie laughs warmly, unflustered. A simple statement, delivered naturally, but emblematic of the woman, as well as the new era of fashion dawning at Lincoln Center.

Stephanie exudes humanity.

Loving wife and mother of three are roles which come foremost, but a passion to work, her mentor Wintour taught, does not have to be compromised. "I like to work," she declares simply. Stephanie's secret? To bend, to laugh, to give the moment and the person you are addressing a level of focus and respect perilously near extinction these days. Her realness is an inspiration, made all the more compelling when juxtaposed with her statuesque beauty. A hint of Frederique van der Wal's bedroom eyes and a style sensibility reminiscent of Jenny Cavilleri at Harvard Yard circa Love Story make her both impossible to label, and irrestible to both sexes. She's the beauty and the best friend; a little sexy, a little cerebral, and obligingly rewinds: "A woman should dress to suit her body and her personal sense of style. An occasional sprinkling of seasonal trends can be fun, but adherence to looks that suit your body's frame should never be sacrificied."

Barking has subsided; Luigi and I are transfixed.

With a seamless transition from Bryant to Damrosch Park and a second fashion week flawlessly executed under her black-belt (Division I basketball, All-American lacrosse, and yes, karate all preceded her entrance into high fashion) the 6'1 crown princess of Fashion Week commences her fashion week round-up with trends she noticed and loved: "The 70's were everywhere, and I couldn't be happier! High-waisted pants - yes, we tall girls applaud! - classic plaids, and geometric prints. Sumptuous, long coats, dramatic capes and long coats. . . and red. Red dominated the runways." Fitting, with Valentine's Day at the heart of NYFW 2011.

It's time for highlights, and the fair-minded Director reminds, "I'm usually drawn to classic, timeless looks, but I can be adventurous if a piece really catches my eye. For my own tastes and frame, there was so much to choose from and it's difficult to name all. Standouts that spring to mind... Derek Lam was terrific - very 70's sporty, and Michael Kors' nod to the era was amazing. I loved the wide-legged trousers Celine paired with the long coats. The mid-calf skirt length at Calvin Klein felt very fresh, but also elegant. I always admire Rodarte. Vera Wang was beautiful. Rag & Bone and Alexander Wang were so chic. L'Wren Scott I find exceptionally well made. And the paisley prints at VACCA were stunning. Donna Karan was exquisite. Sensational. Beautiful." Stephanie pauses, and the fashion drumrolls beat. "But it was Prabal's season," she finishes, and the up-and-coming, albeit already much lauded Prabal Gurung (he only debuted his eponymous collection in February 2009) skyrockets to a star in Winston Wolkoff's galaxy. "He is thoughtful. Serious and contemplative by nature. He chooses his words with care...that precision translates in his work. His collection was a revelation." Indeed Prabal's vocalization of how much he loves Charles Dickens' Great Expectations at a recent dinner came full circle; the entire collection was inspired by Miss Havisham: romantic, decayed elegance in a deluge of feathers, dyed minks, beads, silks, leather and taffeta.

Reflecting on fashion highlights lends a poignant cast to our discussion; Stephanie bears the weight of her new position with pride and humility: "I am poised at the vanguard of fashion. It's a magical place to be, but I am also mindful of how many industries are interwined and affected. It's not just Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week; it's the CFDA, the individual designers, the publishing houses, the publicists, the stylists, the retailers... and so forth. I view my position as fashion's ambassador seriously. It's like chess. Each move effects the entire board."

Queen she may be, but checkmate is hardly near; the end of fashion week does not signal a hiatus for Winston Wolkoff, who has already made impressive strides towards making fashion a year-round presence at Lincoln Center. "I do not believe fashion should exist here for two weeks only. I want it to be on par with music, theater, and opera. Fashion Lincoln Center is a website I am spearheading, with the intent of organizing an invigorating schedule of events. Designer-lecture series, photography exhibitions, emerging talent showcases." The Director's glass office overlooking Revson Fountain doubles as a metaphor as she emphasizes, "I want to open fashion to the masses; it's not about exclusivity."

Stephanie's vision was already felt this February; customized for IMG, Fashion GPS streamlined RSVP and seating lists while also allowing guests to pre-print their tickets and check-in themselves. Television screens along 65th Street offered designers the chance to live-stream their shows, and "The Box" touted the first ever presentation-only space for fashion week. The CIRCA lounge debuted adjacent to the exclusive VIP Star Lounge, but without the fuss of velvet ropes and discerning guest lists. Stephanie, along with CIRCA Chairman and CEO Chris Del Gatto, were a constant presence in the welcoming space which was regularly visited by featured CFDA designers as well as top editors and fashion insiders. Cognizant of fashion's scope beyond Lincoln Center's fashion campus, Stephanie remarkably carved time to visit designer presentations off-site: "If I have the time, I love checking out a presentation. Fashion is not limited to Lincoln Center. It's everywhere. It's a reflection of our times and our lives."

And she's off - large Birkin in tote -"large bags are the best," favorite accessory "my wedding band" from her father's company sparkling for eternity, in a pair of favorite blue jeans - "for me it's always been True Religion or J Brand."

Only a whisper of Givenchy's Amarige in her wake and the lingering suggestion of fashion in full bloom this spring.

Michael Kors was the man of the moment in Paris on Monday night as models, editors and starlets celebrated the designer (and his new French-side store!) at a cocktail and dinner at the Embassy Of The United States.

Everyone was clad in their favorite Kors get-ups and Michael wore his boyish and contagious grin that once, in part, prompted us to ask if he is the cutest guy in fashion...the answer, as we keep finding out, is most certainly yes. Or oui, oui in this case.
PICS: Transsexual Model Lea T. Takes The Runway In Sheer Skirthttp://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/03/07/givenchy-autumnwinter-201_n_832166.htmlThe Huffington Post News Teamhttp://www.huffingtonpost.com/the-news/
Transsexual model Lea T. took to the runway at Paris Fashion Week on Sunday at Riccardo Tisci's Givenchy autumn/winter 2011 show in a decked-out blouse, sheer skirt and a pair of specs. No surprises here: Lea broke into the biz at the urging of Tisci and appeared in his ad campaign last May.

Aside from totally championing Lea, we've been really feeling Givenchy as of late -- from Cate Blanchett's Oscars gown to Florence Welch's flowing frock at the Grammys. This time around, Tisci was inspired by black cats and paired sweatshirts with skirts...a look we can really get behind (and sport ourselves!).

The fashion community was slightly less enthusiastic. Cathy Horyn writes, "You could tell Mr. Tisci was quite inspired by his material....The collection, while enjoyable to watch, didn't extend the pleasure. You were sort of left with the collected motifs of a born cultural synthesizer, rather than the clear direction of a designer."
John Galliano's own label held its ready-to-wear autumn winter 2011 presentation as part of Paris Fashion Week on Sunday.

The designer, who was dismissed from his helm at Dior last week, wasn't in attendance -- he's rumored to be in an Arizona rehab facility. The Associated Press notes that there were only 19 looks shown; typical runways include 45 to 60 ensembles.

From the AP report:

Models in full Galliano regalia traced lazy circles around Baroque, flower-covered centerpieces, pausing in front of the photographers' pits to strike exaggerated poses.

The clothing, bias cut gowns in sheer chiffon and oversized outerwear, was old school Galliano. Voluminous tweed jackets were paired with pencil skirts -- some of them in pastel tinged latex -- and flirty little pleated sundresses poked out from beneath fur-trimmed parkas. Marabou feathers undulated lazily from the hemline and sleeves of a long, lean gown in black silk that glinted with sequins.

Styleite points out that one of the models had a visible tattoo of a Jewish star on her right arm. Finally, an easy-to-achieve makeup trend for fall!

Viktor & Rolf sent a bevy of red-faced models down the runway on Saturday at Paris Fashion Week...red-faced, as in, their faces were painted red. No bold lipstick, sleek eyeliner, or bright blush -- just all red paint.
