Song of the Day: Selena Gomez & The Scene - "Who Says"

Monday May 16, 2011

Hearkening back to simpler pop from another day, Selena Gomez & The Scene drop "Who Says", a slice of pure summer. The track marks a shift from earlier tracks, aiming for pop rock (think Stacie Orrico) and dropping the beats that have made her such a force to be reckoned with on the dance floor. But fear not good readers, because "Who Says" has had the bejeezus remixed out of it. And like the aforementioned Stacie Orrico, the remixes remind of her breakthrough track "More To Life". Tony Moran and Warren Rigg slam the track into pure energy territory with a healthy dose of circuit to give "Who Says" life during the most aggressive sets. Both Dave Aude and Bimbo Jones stick to more melodic mixes, and both work excellently. Joe Bermudez & Chico preferred not to speed up Ms. Gomez's vocals like the other mixes, providing a slower and chunkier mix that could work well on radio. "Who Says" may have doffed the beats in it's original format, but don't get used to the idea of Selena staying from the dance floor for long!

Song of the Day: Wynter Gordon - "Til Death"

Friday May 13, 2011

After securing a hit in clubland with "Dirty Talk", Wynter is looking to become a dance floor staple with "Til Death". The lyrics really are the kind that stick around with you and there's nothing better than flailing your body around singing, "Til death to we party; with the music I die". The original is built on bass and would live on radio airwaves quite easily, the chorus supporting by growling synths and an aggressive beat. Definitely something that makes you take notice, but also consider the Australian remix duo Denzal Park's mix. Electro synths are incorporated and the beat takes a bigger step to the dance floor. Wynter's voice also sounds clearer and more intent. When the chorus drops, it's clear that Denzal Park were dead set on the stadium with the big beats and synths. Wynter's "Til Death" should be another hit for the singer, so keep your ears peeled.

Song of the Day: Adele vs. Robin S - "Show Me In The Deep" (DJs from Mars Bootleg Remix)

Thursday May 12, 2011

While mixers all over have been scrambling to make Adele's stellar track "Rolling In The Deep" work for the dance floor, sometimes all it takes is a little bit of something we've heard millions of times before to really bring it home. DJs From Mars, that awesome due that pair incongruous tracks for amazing results have struck again, this time lacing Adele's powerhouse vocals over their own very special rendition of Robin S's iconic "Show Me Love". But is the simple mash-up format ever enough for the two? Nay, it is never enough. Their production is fierce and unrelenting, but surprised with a top-notch dubstep breakdown. You haven't heard Adele until you've heard her soar over the chugging dubstep the Martians provide. And you haven't heard a remix of "Rolling In The Deep" until you've heard this.

Song of the Day: Calvin Harris ft Kelis - "Bounce"

Wednesday May 11, 2011

It seems like we use this phrase a lot on this site, but as always, the situation warrants it. The combination of Calvin Harris and Kelis is like two great flavors that taste great together. Kelis' distinctive vocals shine through on the uber-Harris-ish production Harris showcases on "Bounce". She sounds great, and the video game synth riff employed by the man who created disco is intriguing and engaging. It really starts off as the cutest send-off track ever, and when the beat drops you definitely don't know what's hit you. "Bounce" sounds a bit like "I'm Not Alone", and hopefully Harris' teaming with Kelis will secure him radio airplay. "Bounce" is already primed to take over clubs, so just bide your time for mixes.
