Summer Day Camps for Salt Lake City Kids

Monday May 9, 2011

Kids, parents and teachers are gearing up for the end of the school year, but once school is out boredom soon sets in if kids don't have something interesting to do. Short-term summer day camps can be a great way to keep kids active during the summer vacation and still allow plenty of time for unstructured play and relaxation.

I've put together a list of some of the best Salt Lake area summer day camps for kids. The possibilities are exciting and nearly limitless, whether your child is into sports, outdoor recreation, music, drama, science, art or all of the above. While you're at it, you could think about signing up for a class or two yourself, through University of Utah Continuing Education or Salt Lake County Parks and Recreation.

Salt Lake City This Weekend: Happy Mother's Day!

Thursday May 5, 2011

Salt Lake City is looking forward to a gorgeous Mother's Day weekend, with plenty of opportunities to show some love for the moms in our lives. Mother's Day is also the traditional "safe date" in Salt Lake City for tender plants such as annual flowers and tomatoes, so there are lots of fun gardening events this weekend. Finally, it's not too late to register for the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, to support breast cancer research and treatment while getting some much-needed exercise outdoors.

An Engrossing Tale of Hollywood's Dark Side: 'Sunset Boulevard' at Pioneer Memorial Theatre

Tuesday May 3, 2011

Andrew Lloyd Webber's Sunset Boulevard, based on the 1950 Billy Wilder film, is the darkly compelling story of Norma Desmond, a faded, deluded Hollywood star, and Joe Gillis, an unemployed screenwriter looking to take advantage of the old lady's madness. It's an engrossing and sadly familiar tale of fame turning to insanity, and the Pioneer Theatre Company production, directed by John Going, brings the story to life with quality performances, spectacular sets and lavish costumes.

Like Webber's Phantom of the Opera, Sunset Boulevard is a story of misaligned, predatory sexuality, insanity and murder. Sunset Boulevard is a bit less spectacular than its more popular sibling, but its plot is compelling and sadly relevant in an era when so many Hollywood stars seem to be destroyed by fame.

Give Mom the Gift of Entertainment

Monday May 2, 2011

Maybe you've have been thinking about what to get Mom for Mother's Day for the past 11 months, but for me, deciding on the perfect Mother's Day gift is a bit of a challenge. One gift that moms usually appreciate, though, is a pair of tickets to a favorite music, entertainment, or theater event. Tickets always fit, they aren't fattening, and they're always in good taste. Your mom will never have to wash them, dust them, or find a place to put them. You can buy one for yourself, too, all in the name of spending more time with dear old Mom.

Salt Lake City events that might make good gifts for Mom include upcoming productions at the Capitol Theatre, Hale Centre Theatre and Pioneer Memorial Theatre, as well as the Utah Opera and Utah Symphony. Click on the link for a full list of Salt Lake City events for Mother's Day gift giving, and have an entertaining Mother's Day!
