The summer solstice occurs June 20 this year for the earth north of the equator. The seasonal significance of the Summer solstice is in the reversal of the gradual shortening of nights and lengthening of days and is better known as the first day of summer.

On June 14, Americans celebrate the adoption of the first national flag. Also known as the "Stars and Stripes" or "Old Glory," the first American flag was approved by the Continental Congress on June 14, 1777. In 1818, after 5 more states joined the Union, Congress passed legislation fixing the number of stripes at 13 and requiring that the number of stars equal the number of states.
Here is a cute little girl proudly holding Old Glory for you to download.

Almost everyone knows Raggedy Ann - she and Raggedy Andy were created by the American writer, Johnny Gruelle in a series of books for young children that he wrote and illustrated. In honor of the special "Duo" June 12 and 13 have been designated Raggedy Ann and Andy days.
Raggedy Ann was introduced to the public in the 1918 book, Raggedy Ann Stories. A 1920 sequel, Raggedy Andy Stories, introduced her brother, Raggedy Andy.
The names Raggedy Ann and/or Raggedy Ann and Andy are trademarked but the original 1918 and 1920 books and the illustrations are in the public domain, their copyright having expired.
