Timely commitment from top leadership at AIDS meeting

Unprecedented number of Heads of State and Government and Vice Presidents to attend UN meeting on AIDS in New York

New York/Geneva, 31 May 2011 — As the AIDS response reaches a critical turning point, world leaders are showing renewed commitment to AIDS as more than 30 Heads of State and Government and Vice Presidents are expected to convene at next week’s UN General Assembly High Level Meeting on AIDS. The top level support is coming at a decisive moment in the AIDS response as more people than ever before are living with HIV but international funding for AIDS is seen to be declining.

The top level leaders will join ministers and other UN Member State representatives to commit to new ways forward in responding to AIDS. There will also be strong participation from civil society and other actors from the AIDS movement who will join discussions on how to take the AIDS response to the next level.

“The commitment we are seeing for this meeting from world leaders is an extremely positive signal and is coming at a critical time,” said Michel Sidibé, Executive Director of UNAIDS. “This meeting will provide a real opportunity for countries to take ownership of the response and produce a strong and visionary declaration to guide global efforts in reaching universal access to HIV prevention, treatment, care and support by 2015.”

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) established the Global Commission on HIV and the Law.
The objectives of the Commission are to:

•    Increase awareness amongst key constituencies on issues of rights and law in the context of HIV and engage with civil society and strengthen their ability to campaign, advocate and lobby

The Regional/Arab network Against Aids is pleased to inform you that the Commission is organizing the Regional Dialogue for the Middle East and North Africa in September 2011.
This Forum will provide a unique opportunity for civil society to engage directly with government officials, law experts, United Nations representatives and members of the Global Commission to discuss gaps and opportunities for changes in the law, practices of law enforcement, issues with legal aid and access to redress
Elie Aaraj introduces new RANAA coordinator Ms. Golda Eid
Tuesday, 24 May 2011 14:18 ranaa
I have the pleasure to introduce RANAA's new coordinator, Ms. Golda Eid.

Golda Eid graduated in business from the Holy Spirit University, Lebanon, and obtained a Diploma in Decentralization  and Local Governance from the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC), Spain. Her experience in leading positions  within different companies and organizations allowed her to develop extensive coordination and management skills on local, regional and  international levels.

As a Projects Officer for more than 7 years at United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG), Ms. Eid helped local  authorities in addressing their needs towards central governments, other international authorities, international  donors and organizations and liaising with mayors, government ministers and city officials throughout Europe and the Middle East.

She coordinated the work of two networks, “Réseau des Villes Historiques et Archéologiques” and “Réseau des Villes EuroMéditerranéennes” and worked as a facilitator between technicians and experts from one side and elected members that have more political perspective from the other side, in order to converge the objectives of both parties.
