Friday brought sad news from Morey's Piers in Wildwood, New Jersey: An 11-year old girl has died after falling from the Giant Wheel, NBC Philadelphia reports.

The as-yet unnamed girl was on the moving Ferris wheel roughly half-way up the ride when she fell from the car at around 12:30pm, police told the station. That's the equivalent of falling from the top of a five-story building.

Local police told local NBC report Ted Greenberg that the girl was likely on a school trip at the time of the incident, which has been ruled a freak accident. Greenberg tweeted a photo from the scene (click here to view).

Morey's Piers released a statement saying: "The Morey staff and family offer our thoughts and prayers to the family."

The Associated Press reports that the Ferris wheel and several others have been closed.

The Ferris wheel is among the largest on the East Coast.

UPDATE: The park is now closed, according to the Press of Atlantic City.

UPDATE 6/4: The girl has been identified as Abiah Jones, the New York Post reports.

If this girl's survival instincts couldn't keep her from falling out of a perfectly functional container..who is to say it wouldn't have been something else..It's sad but let's not continue to allow hysteria to rule our lives. Every time this pansy society thinks it's eliminating a problem it is only creating a new one...Complain your kids don't get outside much..overweight..ADHD...whatever it is you're doing it to yourselves.

If a chest high metal bar isn't going to keep someone from falling out of the gondola on a ferris wheel what makes you think a seat belt will? Is it necessary for the owner's manual of a blow dryer to direct the user NOT to use it while in the bathtub. Is it necessary for McDonald's to put "Caution: Contents are Hot" on their coffee cups? Common sense goes a long way....

Geez, I've been on that thing! Found it quite terrifying. Come to think of it, I went on that bridge in Minnesota too before it collapsed. That last plane I was on caught fire..... I gotta quit going places.

Poor little girl! I hope she didn't suffer long. ;_;

Are U kinding me about seatbelts? I grew up riding ferris wheels as a kid w/o seatbelts and nothing happen to U as long as u follow the bacic rules of not clowning around while U are up there on the ferris wheel. Ferris wheels are one of the safest amusement park rides out there right behind merry-go- rounds. My heart and prayers go out to the family,but if people don't follow a little bit of common sense by not stepping on the seats and bending over to get a view as u look over the rail then tradgedies like these will never end.

MY heart,thoughts and prayers go out to this family. You think your child is safe when they go out on these class trips, well think again. My thought is the teachers should always make sure that any ride that a child goes on "because they are resposible for their safety at this time" should ALWAYS make sure that the children are ALWAYS safe...This did'nt have to be a ride they cross streets as well, this is where caution was neglected I feel for thos parents what a tradgedy that did not have to happen, as for the Morey Family you my have one hell of a law suit, a ride that high without seat belts or some kind of restraint what the hell were you thinking...

Ferris Wheels do have restraints. And why is it that they answer to everything in this country has to be a lawsuit? It's sad, but more than likely the kid decided to start rocking the car or climbed up on the guardrail when she fell. If you've ever been on a ferris wheel you should know there's no way you can accidentally fall out of one of those things unless you're doing something you're not supposed to do.

Why is everyone talking about seat belts? I have been on that ferris wheel over a dozen times..the bars are so high, there is no way to accidently fall out if you are just sitting there enjoying the view. It is very sad that people dont teach their children the way to act before they send them off alone.

I agree. 90% of the posts on here are wondering where the seat belts were, or how can a ride that goes up that high, not have seat belts in place. Seat belts (same type you all use in your car) main purpose isto protectyoufrom flying out of you seat if something like a crashed accorded. There is no physical way that two of the gondolas would, or will ever crash. The way people are posting on here about the seat belts, in how if they wereinstalled on there, she wouldnt have fallen over. I disagree completely. The way those perticular gondolas were designed, the only way a person might get hurt, is if they werent paying attention to the millions of signs posted all around, inside the cart. She didn't care about those signs saying not to stand up, so what makes everyone think that if she had a seatbelt on, she just wouldn't take it off midway through the ride. This whole incident was a freak accident, but it is an extremely sad freak accident. There is nothing that the Moreys or the ride operators could have done different, at this point, that would have prevented this accident. You do your best to explain the dangerous aspects of some of the rides, and notify them in multiple ways and multiple times on how to keep your self safe. There is nothing the amusement park could have done more. Everyone just prays that the kids and guests pay attention to the signs. When there are ten signs pointing In your face that all say "remain seated".then remain seated, they are there for a reason.

IF the child had removed her own seat belt, although STILL a tragedy .. at least the park would have done their darnest to provide safety. We'd be weeping for the little gal, but the park would not have been liable in any way. God bless us all and may He hold this child tenderly in His arms, Amen.

Darwin at work as far as I am concerned. You will notice on the video the dad ordering his kid to "sit down, sit down, you have to sit!" Common sense. A seat belt would not have saved this kid because she probably would have unbuckled it and horsed around anyway. At eleven she was old enough to know better. When I was that age I went on carnival rides all the time, unsupervised, but wasn't a fool. Which explains why I am alive five decades later and this girl is not.
