Religion and Global Development

The Berkley Center's Religion and Global Development program tracks the engagement of religious communities around global policy challenges and brings together stakeholders to examine best practices and advance collaboration. The program is supported by the Luce/SFS Program on Religion and International Affairs.

RELATED PROJECTS

Global Mapping of Faith-Inspired Organizations and Development

The Berkley Center, in conjunction with the World Faiths Development Dialogue (WFDD), is undertaking a global mapping exercise to capture the activities of faith-inspired organizations across world regions. Through a series of background reports, in-depth interviews with practitioners, and international symposia, the Faith-Inspired Organizations and Development project charts organizations anchored in particular faith traditions or with ecumenical or interfaith approaches that are engaged in global development agendas, including poverty relief, education, and the struggle against HIV/AIDs and malaria. Project reviews to date have focused on the United States, the Muslim World, Europe and Africa, Central and South America, and Southeast Asia. Preparatory work for a review of faith-inspired organizations in South and Central Asia has begun. The aim is to continue the "mapping" work and exploration of various policy dimensions.

Religion and Global Development Issues Survey
The Berkley Center is conducting a multi-year survey of critical issues at the intersection of religion and development. Project publications and associated events track the engagement of faith-inspired organizations around a set of core policy challenges, with an emphasis on common problems, ethical commitments, and best practices. The project, supported by the Luce/SFS Program on Religion and International Affairs, has addressed HIV/AIDs, Gender, Shelter, Governance, Malaria, Tuberculosis, Water and Sanitation, and Maternal Mortality.

Women, Religion, and Peace: Experience, Perspectives, and Policy Implications

An Exploration by the US Institute of Peace (USIP), the Berkley Center for Religion, Peace, and World Affairs, and the World Faiths Development Dialogue (WFDD)

Scholars and practitioners have devoted increasing attention to the roles played by religious leaders and communities, both in instigating and prolonging violent conflict and in negotiating and building peace. In much of the world, formal religious leadership tends to be heavily dominated by men, and so investigations of religion and conflict have tended to focus on men's perspectives and roles. Women's engagement in religious peacemaking has received far less attention and their perspectives, needs, and unique leverage are often largely ignored in the design of traditional religious peacemaking initiatives. However, women often play critical roles in conflict situations. Their inspiration, motivating framework, and active community roots frequently have faith dimensions even if these are not formally acknowledged. The lack of analysis on the intersection of women, religion, conflict, and peace has led not only to a gap in understanding the nature of conflict, but has hidden from view potential avenues for resolving conflicts, promoting healing after conflict, and building sustainable peace.

Practitioners and Faith-Inspired Development
"What is the role of faith in your work?" The Practitioners and Faith-Inspired Development interview series asks this fundamental question of leaders in the field. The assembled in-depth conversations with activists and policy specialists examine best practices and collaborative strategies across a range of contemporary challenges, including HIV/AIDS, malaria, education, governance, and gender.

Faith and Development in Cambodia Interview Series
In conjunction with WFDD's investigation into the links between faith and development in Cambodia, the Berkley Center is spotlighting interviews conducted in Cambodia with the goal of increasing understanding of faith-inspired development work, and of identifying issues and challenges that could be addressed in order to further progress towards development goals.
