RELATED PROGRAM

Religious Freedom Project

Georgetown University's Berkley Center for Religion, Peace, and World Affairs has received a $2 million grant from the John Templeton Foundation to support the interdisciplinary study of religious freedom. The Religious Freedom Project engages a team of leading international scholars led by the Center's Thomas Farr.

RELATED PROJECT

Religious Freedom and Economic, Social, and Political Development

Recent empirical research suggests a positive correlation between levels of religious freedom across countries and measures of economic, social, and political development. It appears that citizens' capacity to act on the basis of core beliefs has positive effects on civic and political life, including economic development and the onset and consolidation of democracy. Drawing on this research, the project will explore the conditions under which religious freedom serves other ends. What dimensions of religious freedom -- belief, practice, and political engagement -- have positive effects? When and how do they do so? The project will address these questions through ongoing research to be presented through events and publications.

Prioritizing International Religious Freedom in US Foreign Policy

Thomas Farr

June 3, 2011

Thomas Farr, Director of the Religious Freedom Project, presented testimony before the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, Subcommittee on Africa, Global Health, and Human Rights on June 3, 2011. The subcommittee hearing was convened to discuss HR 1856, "International Religious Freedom Act Amendments of 2011." Farr argues in his testimony that the promotion of religious freedom as part of US foreign policy is crucial to the success of American diplomatic efforts and to American national security.
