Friday brought sad news from Morey's Piers in Wildwood, New Jersey: An 11-year old girl has died after falling from the Giant Wheel, NBC Philadelphia reports.

The as-yet unnamed girl was on the moving Ferris wheel roughly half-way up the ride when she fell from the car at around 12:30pm, police told the station. That's the equivalent of falling from the top of a five-story building.

Local police told local NBC report Ted Greenberg that the girl was likely on a school trip at the time of the incident, which has been ruled a freak accident. Greenberg tweeted a photo from the scene (click here to view).

Morey's Piers released a statement saying: "The Morey staff and family offer our thoughts and prayers to the family."

The Associated Press reports that the Ferris wheel and several others have been closed.

The Ferris wheel is among the largest on the East Coast.

UPDATE: The park is now closed, according to the Press of Atlantic City.

UPDATE 6/4: The girl has been identified as Abiah Jones, the New York Post reports.

You people are disgusting. If it was your 11 year old, would you specifically explain instructions and procedures for each and every ride? Give me a break. Why everyone has to play the blame game baffles me. It was an accident and you should respect the deceased and her family.

i think the responsibility resides with the parents, yes it's a HUGE ferris wheel but it seems the little boy in the video didn't have a problem sitting still and enjoying the ride. ferris wheels RARELY if ever have seat belts why? because they're ferris wheels. if you sit still and enjoy the ride, nothing will happen. if you stop paying attention and lean over the side and fall out that's YOUR FAULT and since the girl was 11 and underage that makes it the responsibility of the parents. they should have been on the ride with her to protect and watch her so she didn't fall out.

I'm sorry but how do you FALL out of a ferris wheel unless your unsupervised (no parents) and leaning over the edge (irresponsible and an 11 year old should have known better).

mark this one down in points because it says that a little girl or her parents are at fault for her death but they are. it's not the Ferris wheel it's not the amusement park it's the actions of the individuals on the ride. if you watch the video the father tells his son TO SIT DOWN. which is probably why both are still alive.

it's the truth.

Yes, why does't Americans take responsibility for our own actions? I'll tell you why because we have become a nation of greedy candy asses!! That's Why!! It's always someone else's fauly for our own stupidy and ignorence. Maybe if more people would disipline the little mutants we would'nt have issues like this. Parents are to blame for the way their children are today because they don't teach them to have respect for anyone or themselves. They think everyone owes them. Well in my book you have pull down your pants and take a crap the same way I do. Wake Up America!!!!!!

What are all the ridiculous postings about anyone supposedly wishing harm on this poor unfortunate child? All many of the people here have said is that there are indeed consequences to our actions! I have been riding amusements since I was a child and I am in my late 40's. Never had a problem, never tried to open latches, security bars, gates, etc to anything I was riding. Sorry to say, but unless a mechanical malfunction is discovered, a successful lawsuit is very unlikely if the family were so inclined. Of course it is tragic, no one would deny that! But children must be taught how to properly behave whether in an amusement park, boardwalk amusement pier, restaurant, church, etc. To let children dictate to the parents as to how they will behave is a disservice to them. And this time, it may have cost this child her life. Only time will tell. Condolences and prayers to the family.

Freak accident? Is that a euphemism for equipment failure or that she jumped? I'd like more details...what a sad story. My heartfelt prayers to the poor girl's family!

if your talking about the ride in question.... its not part of the design.... frankly straps on rides in parks like this are normally reserved for fast rides or ones that go upside down...& when you get on the ride at this pier in question(I go ev year so I know ...) they tell ya not to touch the doors...don't lean over the ledge, etc......

Yes i agree its a shame she died, but MILLION's of people have ridden a ferris wheel in past and did not die ! 11 yrs old is old enough to follow both written & verbal safety instructions from ride operators, does this child follow "Do not Cross " signs on city streets or use crosswalks ?? Does she follow instructions during a school fire drill ? ?

Lets stop blaming organizations and commercial establishments for our own stupid actions. I share the familes grief in their loss, but i'm sure a investigation will show this family run park was following both industry and state safety requirements. We need to take responsibility for our own actions, unfortunatly this poor child pushed too far. Would the the family sue the city / town she ignored a "Do not Cross" sign and was struck by a car ?
