10 Colleges With The Fewest Cars On Campus

First Posted: 06- 6-11 12:21 AM   |   Updated: 06- 6-11 11:19 AM

Do you go to Georgetown? Odds are, you probably are not driving a car to class, according to US News and World Report's list of colleges with the fewest cars on campus. Georgetown, along with Polytechnic Institute of New York University and University of Wisconsin at Madison are campuses where absolutely no one has cars. A utopia of sorts for those of us who hate traffic.

US News and World Report has more:

Georgetown, for instance, does not allow students who live on campus to have cars there, though the school's Washington, D.C., location allows access to a vast public transportation system, as is the case for NYU-Poly students in New York City.

At Wisconsin, the school's transportation services department offers amenities to incentivize alternate means of travel. Bicyclists, for instance, can pump up a flat tire at airhose stations along the campus's many bike trails and novice riders can pair with more experienced ones, who can point them to the fastest routes through campus via the school's "bike buddies" program.

Does your campus allow cars? Do you think students should be able to have cars on campus? Weigh in, in the comments section.

Well, driving in New York is pretty bad. You would be late to classes if you drove a car. The only way is to use the Undeground or ride a bike. Well, rollerblading might also be an option. Any other ideas? :)

If there is good public transit then I dont see the problem however where I went, my undergrad and grad school both had awful public transit and if you actualy wanted a job while in school a car was the only way to get to it.

Huh, I go to Wisconsin and I've never heard about the airhose stations or the bike buddies program. But then again, I don't bike (too afraid to bike next to traffic and I like walking).

I'm going to the University of Oregon next year and will not have a car. That was always one of my biggest issues when I was applying for college, was that I wanted to have a car on campus. But, I fell in love with Oregon, and not having a car is part of going there. All students are allowed to have cars, but there is no parking except for the streets around campus and a parking garage that is currently being built. Coming from a Central California town with a public transit system that is used more as a home for the homeless than it is as a mode of transportation. But after going and seeing how the college town works, it's very nice and reassuring to know that I can get anywhere with a bike or bus. But, I still think I want a car for when I'm an upperclassmen so I can go to the beach or mountains. Who knows, maybe my mind will change.

Having a car at Georgetown would be lunacy anyway. The hardest place in the USA to park is is the Georgetown section of Washington DC.

When went to Lawrence University in WI (somewhat NE of Madison, just south of Green Bay), almost nobody had a car. Anyone who was on financial aid had to have permission to have a car, parking was limited, almost everything was within walking distance of campus, so there was really little incentive to have one.

Well as a guy who's on UW-Madison campus everyweek I don't know what to think! I do know that there are an incredible number of bikes, mopeds and the buses are FULL. Maybe I am the only one in a car and I am not a student! :)

There are people at Johns Hopkins?

I'm guessing that you are, or were, a student whose academic performance did not meet Johns Hopkins' standards, and whose application to attend the University was subsequently rejected. Am I right?

What is the point of your question? Why wouldn't there be people at a university?

I was making a joke about how it seems to be rather empty for the size of the campus.

Johns Hopkins is an awesome school.

I'm not denying that. It just seems rather empty for the size of the campus.

I have a car at Yale. You need it if you ever want to go off campus. Columbia should be on this list too as they don't allow students to have cars. NYU too, I would assume.

Look at the schools. Most of them are in the Northeast. Lucky people who live in the Northeast. You guys have so many options to get to school. Subway, bus, light rail, heck, even the train or walk. Not so much over here in California.

I went to undergrad at Johns Hopkins and w/o a car it's difficult to get to places (off-campus) cheaply. The bus system is inefficient and the light rail is very infrequent. I once paid an exorbitant cab fee just to go someplace in Timonium.

Things have gotten a little bit easier as of late. There's the free "charm city circulator" which gets you around, and ZipCar has come to the city so for those who don't have cars but need one, you can rent them on an hourly basis.

I don't understand the reason for this list. What's next: the college with the least Twinkies on campus? Stop having interns make up lists just to give them something to do.

well it's not surprising to see the urban colleges having a 0% rate; also this poll would be more meaningful if they actually surveyed only schools that allow vehicles in the first place, as some have policies against them altogether.

When I was at Georgetown, I knew some really affluent guys, but none who had a car on campus. However, I knew a handful who had cars off campus, in Burleith and elsewhere (when I was at Georgetown, students had to live off campus for at least one year....I believe that nowadays, students have to live on campus for at least three years).
