Sarah Palin Denies Chris Wallace’s Charge That She ‘Messed Up About Paul Revere’

This morning Sarah Palin appeared on Fox News Sunday and Chris Wallace did not hesitate to ask her about her recent version of historical events that left many a bit perplexed. Wallace said “you realized that you messed up about Paul Revere, don’t you?” Yet Palin informed Wallace, and by extension any of her critics, that in fact they were wrong to think that Revere did not also give a warning to the British.

Before they addressed the Paul Revere controversy, Palin had a minor bone to pick with her Fox News colleague Shepard Smith regarding the purpose behind her bus tour and reiterated that “it’s not a campaign tour”:

“At least reporters don’t seem to be understanding it. Even your own Shep Smith there on Fox News, he announced the other day that I was on some publicity tour. I wanted to say, ‘Shep, take it one step further. What am I publicizing on this tour?’ I’m publicizing Americana and our foundation and how important it is that we learn about our past and our challenges and victories throughout American history.”

Regarding her earlier statement that Paul Revere “warned the British,” Palin suggested this wasn’t a misstatement that many tried to portray it as:

“You know what, I didn’t mess up about Paul Revere. Here’s what Paul Revere did. He warned the Americans that ‘the British were coming, the British were coming’ and they were going to try to take our arms. . . . But remember, the British had already been there . . . part of his ride was to warn the British that were already there that, ‘hey, you’re not going to succeed. You’re not going to take American arms. You are not going to beat our own well-armed persons, individual, private militia that we have.’ He did warn the British. And in a shout-out, gotcha-type of question that was asked of me, I answered candidly. And I know my American history.”

For any “gotcha journalists” out there, Palin wants you to know that she does know her American history, but just prefers such questions about it aren’t shouted-out at her in the future.

Were you arguing the Palin/Revere case to a jury, the Jury would at least be tired of you by know. You might even lose the case as you go over and over with the same evidence. Effectively, you both manage to talk yourself out a cogent argument. You both have command of the facts, however, you both way over use them to the point of tedium. Which should give both of you insight as to the nature of the argument.

Argumentation and debate analysts might call this “Inflation of the conflict”. Ergo, you’ve made your point, move on.

Another consideration is called “the least possible hypothesis”. Ergo, you search not for the most plausible reason, rather, you desire a particular result, so, the least plausible reason will suffice. Hence, Ms. Palin did not simply misspeak, to you, she made a career ending faux pas that could damage the Union.

I realize this quote is trite, however: “thou doest protest to much, me thinks”. All of you risk losing any debate, because, your credibility is threatened by your own vehemence. In other words, quit beating the dead whatever it is!
