Steven Spielberg: Ronald Reagan Said 'E.T.' Was Real, Was Probably Joking

Et Reagan

Long out of Hollywood, Ronald Reagan may have put on his own little acting clinic in the company of a legendary director.

In a new interview with Aint It Cool News, Spielberg details the time he screened his classic film "E.T." at the White House for Reagan and distinguished guests -- and the former president's coy response to the alien epic.

"He just stood up and he looked around the room, almost like he was doing a headcount, and he said, 'I wanted to thank you for bringing E.T. to the White House. We really enjoyed your movie,' and then he looked around the room and said, And there are a number of people in this room who know that everything on that screen is absolutely true,'" Spielberg remembered. "And he said it without smiling! But he said that and everybody laughed, by the way. The whole room laughed because he presented it like a joke, but he wasn't smiling as he said it."

So, did he really believe that the story of the friendly little Reese's Pieces loving alien and his young friend actually happened?

Maybe, maybe not. But Spielberg thinks it was probably a joke from the actor president. Not that he isn't hoping otherwise.

"I think he delivered a joke without smiling, without a little bit of a twinkle behind the joke," Spielberg said. "I think the joke landed because everybody laughed, but because I'm a little bit of a Ufologist I was hoping that there was something more to the joke than met my eye. I'm sorry to say I think he was simply trying to tell a joke."

Interestingly, Spielberg's new movie, "Super 8," involves government secret coverups about aliens and mysterious forces. Perhaps if he screens it for Barack Obama, he may get another little hint.

Makes sense. Both Reagan and E.T. were probably created in Jim Henson's workshop.

Ronald Reagan also thought Trickle-Down Economics was real too.

They used to show the guys in the Army a movie about how a plane and how the ball turrent gunner was trapped. Anyway, As the plane is going down everyone gets out. The pilot stays behind. The gunner tells him to leave. The pilot say No will go down together. Reagan thought this was real also.

Well there is a museum in Kansas that claims dinosaurs and man lived together. They even have dinosaur saddles . Plenty of believers flock to the "museum".
6 hours ago (10:30 AM)
I thought it was in Kentucky?

Unless there are TWO of them . . .
6 hours ago (10:43 AM)
You are right, it is in Kentucky. But apaprantely they have many more such dinosaur/man museums- eg Glendive, Montana .

The sad thing is that about 1/3rd of Americans apparantely believe that man and dinosaurs lived together and that men rode dinosaurs.

During the 80's I kept hoping that Reagan's presidency was just a movie... unfortunately it wasn't. It was all too real... :-|
6 hours ago (10:13 AM)
yeah, we needed another 4 years of carter leadership. maybe he could have boycotted the '84' Olympics too.
6 hours ago (10:30 AM)
As opposed to the tragedy Reagan visited on America? I'd take the boycott any day.

Oh please. No one else would have laughed if they thought he was serious. That would have been disrespectful to the president. Surely some folks in the room knew Reagan better and to know the difference (thus the laughing).

Reagan, most certainly, had said some wacky and nonsensical things as he got closer to the end. But I don't think this one of those times. I'm actually surprised Spielberg publicly spoke on this.

Alzheimer's is a horrible disease as it progresses. But remember, it doesn't mean the person was always like that. Yes, he wasn't quite there at the end, but I do just do not think he was loony his whole time as president, like some seem to think. It just seems really disrespectful to me, and I'm not even a Reagan fan. In fact, I'm actually kind of surprised I'm here defending him.
I guess it is because even people with Alzheimer's have moments of clarity, so maybe we shouldn't always assume the worst and stereotype.
11 hours ago (5:55 AM)
You equate believing in UFO's to having Alzheimer's?

My husband and I saw something truly unexplainable while in our mid-forties. Is premature dementia your only possible explanation for the two of us?

Ronnie thought people on welfare were living like royalty, that ketchup was a veggie and that tax cuts could cure cancer. So yeah, ET is not a stretch for the gipper.

Have you studied Carters policies or are you reciting Hannity and Coulter? Next time you fill up your gas tank, ask yourself if you think you're paying too much. 35 years ago "the worst president in our 220 year history" wanted to change The United States Of America's oil dependence. He wanted us to switch to Solar and wind and started the research into the electric car. Your boy Ronnie "Lets cancel combat pay for Vietnam Vets cuz we didn't declare war in Vietnam" Reagan, canceled those initiatives before he patted himself on the back for keeping the Iranian Hostages held captive for 4 months longer than they needed.
