Men

Posted: 06/ 7/11 08:39 AM ET

Can anyone tell me why so many famous and powerful men decide not only to take pictures of their private parts but to text, tweet and email them to people?

How many men have to be caught before men actually learn from the guys who have gone before?

This time it's Congressman Anthony Weiner. Here was a successful politician, a rising star in the Democratic Party and a possible candidate for mayor of New York in the next election. He had a really bright future, but there was a camera built into his phone and he just couldn't help himself. He had to strip down and take a few pictures.

Others who have succumbed to this temptation include Tiger Woods, Brett Favre and former Congressman Chris Lee. Lee resigned after his photo -- which was very similar to some of those tweeted by Anthony Weiner -- went public. Weiner has decided to try to ride out the storm and the pundits are busy debating if he can survive.

At least he appeared at his press conference to announce that he has been lying to us for the last 10 days alone. I am thankful there was no dutiful wife standing just off to the side looking as though she had been hit by a truck, still reeling from the news. Weiner apologized to her and then threw her under a bus. He said she knew about his sexcapades. He said he has been doing this for about three years, which means he was indulging his internet fantasies before and during his marriage. Am I really supposed to believe that this was all happening with his wife's knowledge and consent? Puhleeze.

Me thinks that the congressman is still lying. The congressman is a liar; how am I supposed to believe anything this man says? He did not want to go into detail about his relationships with what he says is six different women. He wants us to believe he realizes that what he did was wrong and that he is going back to work and he is going to work on being a better man. He became emotional while referring to his wife and their families.

I think the congressman is upset, embarrassed and remorseful. He is upset that he got caught. He is embarrassed that we now know his dirty little secret and he regrets the loss of the pristine image he had painted, wrapped and sold to us for the last 14 years.

I don't think what Congressman Weiner did was so awful. What makes me angry is being deceived. I hate not trusting the people who represent me and who make our laws. You want that job? Then really stand for something. Don't just offer me lip service. It would be so refreshing at a time like this if this wasn't just another exercise in damage control.

By the way, there is no way we can have a Mayor Weiner at this point in time. Digital pictures on the internet are forever. Sorry.

Robin,

Every morning I turn on the computer and I'm flashed so much T & A it makes my head spin. Why isn't it a problem if women show their junk? Please lets get serious. Back in the 60's when Martin Luther King was the voice of a movement, of an entire peoples, how would you have felt if it had come out of his infidelities, or if he had Tweeted his Junk? Would that have erased his career? Would his message be any less relevant? MLK did have numerous affairs, but he was still a remarkable man. Not even his affairs will change that.

Now you might say he never lied to the media. 1st. you do not know that, and 2nd. he probably did. He like Weiner would have been trying to protect his family, and himself. Being famous, Robin, I'm sure you have things that you would rather not be in print, and you might lie to keep it out of the media.

Congressperson Weiner is a good politician. From what I can tell he's a good person, he's HUMAN who seems to be sorry. I think he can and will learn from his mistake, and be a better husband, and a better politician. It is his "Wake-up Call".

As far as the Mainstream Media being upset that they were lied to. Who the Eff are you anyway? During his press conference they were like sharks. Media would eat their own mothers. Sorry!

his wife probably did know. some women do not want the usual mono marriage/relationship society says that like, wants, and desires that do not conform to the collective mind state are wrong so people don't talk about their 'true' lives and self. we're creating a very dual-personality self destructive society. what ever happened to different strokes for different folks.

Robin, after working with your partner for all these decades, how can you still be surprised that men like to take pictures of their junk?
5 hours ago (8:45 AM)
It only happens to a certain age group and it incudes women. I discussed this with many of my contemporaries and think that it is somewhere below 50. I'm 64. We often wonder what we did wrong when raising our children.

Below 50 is a pretty large age group. I am more disturbed that youngsters think it's ok to send nekid pics of themselves to all and sundry. Maybe the people who are inventing the phones should build in a setting where a pic can only be viewed on the phone it is sent to or something, and cut out the sharing of these images.

Am I the only one who doesn't want to know anything about politicians' personal lifes? What does any of this have to do with Weiner's political positions? Does anybody on this thread know what they are? Why does everybody want their politicians to be morally immaculate saints? They are not better than the rest of us. They are - like all who want power - probably worse than the rest of us. Surprise. Yet the public somehow thinks they have the right to hold politicians to a higher standard than themselves and are entitled to detailed knowledge about their private lifes. I smell hypocrisy! I say: If they commit a crime, remove them from office. Immediately. But otherwise: Please, don't bother me with this stuff!

Nice post, Robin. This paragraph pretty much sums up my thoughts:

"I don't think what Congressman Weiner did was so awful. What makes me angry is being deceived. I hate not trusting the people who represent me and who make our laws. You want that job? Then really stand for something. Don't just offer me lip service. It would be so refreshing at a time like this if this wasn't just another exercise in damage control."

The sending of photos in and of itself isn't so bad, it's the idea that he outright lied and expected to get away with it.

Why are men this way? I dunno ask Howard.
5 hours ago (8:13 AM)
Howard doesn't cheat, so he wouldn't know.
4 hours ago (9:36 AM)
How do you know? Are you personally involved with Howard's intimate life. He is an entertainer, so I personally only know the character he exhibits. Sadly much of what I have seen/read makes me wonder what kind of person he really is... he does say quite a lot of outrageous nonsense.

I could not have said any of this better, Robin. And HoneyBaked, you're missing the point. Various types of lying are indeed part and parcel of the political landscape, but there is something mystifyingly stupid about anyone who thinks this kind of thing can not easily be discovered and exposed thus trashing one's career and personal relationships. Expressing shock over this act is not even a moral judgment (I don't think many people care about the act itself, the "sanctity" of his marriage or his blatant adulthood attempt to compensate for what was certainly an ugly nerd adolescence). Robin is not shocked about the lying as much as the stupidity of thinking this or future such stupid acts would not be uncovered in such a public profession and when we have seen this happen repeatedly! There is a critical lack of both impulse control and cause and effect learning on these guys' part, and it boggles the mind.

stuff like this is why we need more women in decision making positions in government

They are like flashers who are basically harmless but get a cheap thrill out of exposing themselves. Maybe the rich and famous have the extra kick of "wow, wonder what will happen if they ever find out this teensy weensy wiener is mine?"

Just ignore them and they'll go away.

I feel sorry for his wife. She is obviously a smart career driven lady who thought she was marrying a great catch. To have your private life dragged into the public and find out that your hubby was carrying on a secret sexual life and lying about it is very harsh. Perhaps she should run for mayor instead?
13 hours ago (12:39 AM)
What a laughably naive article.

This reads as though it were written by someone who had just experienced their first grade school heartbreak and was so damaged by the betrayal that they found it useful to swear off those icky boys forever.

Politicians lie, Robin. That is what they do. No politician has ever been elected by telling the truth. None. Not a single one. When you can recognize that simple truth, you might be able to get past the occasional twittered penis pic.

He didn't campaign as a champion of moral goodness. He betrayed his wife. I think you should leave his punishment to her.
11 hours ago (1:57 AM)
Yes HoneyBaked, politicians lie. What is tiresome and irritating is when caught "holding the bag" they keep lying. For goodness sake, why can't they just own up to it. That's what I'd appreciate at this point in time. Robin also has a good point--- why don't people learn not to keep doing the uploading? Weiner's bad judgment is more than a simple faux pax--it shows his immaturity and inability to understand history.

You mean like Britney Spears, Paris Hilton, etc. flashing their privates to the press and releasing sex tapes to give their careers a boost?
