One More Thing About Mitt Romney...

Posted: 06/ 4/11 07:23 PM ET

Twitter, the ultimate form of social networking in this ADHD world of ours, is not without its pluses. But at times, I sense some (myself included) are not quite prepared for the rapid fire, press conference-like exchange of opinion and lame repartee that can, by turns, overwhelm that particular site. Perhaps Twitter is best for promotional purposes. I don't really know just yet.

But apropos of my Twitter-izing about Mitt Romney and the GOP field of candidates, let me add this addendum. I did not write that Romney is a Ken doll. He is anything but. And the sooner Democratic political operatives agree on that, the better for Obama. I referred to that iconic retail figure to highlight those types that are lean of frame and square jawed, like Romney, who seem to hold the public's attention more easily. Something starkly visual that either aids a candidacy or rarely hurts it. Especially where the candidate is a male. Comments about Sarah Palin's beauty were punted around in the political media, but it was a double-edged sword that cost as much as it benefited. Especially with other women, oddly enough.

Romney is a serious challenge to Obama. He is wealthy, so he can pay for his own helicopter to his kid's ballgame. He lacks any of the abjectly feral, political hit man quality of, say, Gingrich. He is a decent speaker, and will only improve if his GOP handlers are as Pygmalionesque as they have proven in the past.

More importantly, Obama is still someone that many Americans have chosen to withhold their deepest feelings of admiration and affection for, in spite of the fact that he got bin Laden's scalp, contributed to saving the US auto industry (at least for now), and coughed up his birth certificate to silence all of that Swift-boating, election-nullifying trash out there. He appears to be a very bright, sober, hard-working, deeply caring man. A husband and father.

Obama is lean of frame and square of jaw and loves his country, too. Obama and Romney even share some opinions on matters of urgent domestic policy. Yet, in some people's eyes, Obama lacks something.

I wonder what that could be?

We are still at war ,still have gitmo, still don't know whats next with the bailout not do we know how the last 700B was applied....Man if this was my CFO his job would be making plates for your Ford.. According to Obama's supporters Obama can't be criticized. If the economy improves he gets the credit. If things don't improve it is Bush's fault. Doesn't make sense to me. According to them Obama can't be blamed no matter what happens.

Mormon's believe strictly in the "end of days". They stockpile their pantrys with enough food to survive an Armageddon moment as per their religions teachings....Am I the only one that finds it shocking and really really scary to elect someone with this mentality to the presidency???
1 hour ago (1:34 AM)
We Mormons stockpile food and money for emergency situations, not for the end of days. These situations include: job loss, catastrophes, helping others in need.

When watching videos of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan, knowing full-well that the many people would be spending the night in the cold and without electricity, it was comforting to know that the Mormons there had food, candles, flashlights, blankets, clean water, generators for themselves and for their neighbors.

We are a people that are prepared and are self-reliant. We don't rely on the gov. for welfare or to take care of us in these situations.

Hochingj....to be respectful, but; brutally honest: My religion will not allow me to vote for Romney. Not in a million years, no disrespect to your religion.
55 minutes ago (1:50 AM)
Actually, it's not done in anticipation of an "Armageddon moment". A house full of twinkies isn't going to save you from a nuclear catasrophe. It's done to provide some security for the family if times get tough -- which, incidentally, they are now. They recommend stocking basic food and water to feed the family for at least six months, and ideally, a year. They also stress that church members should try to avoid getting into debt, and abusing credit cards. They promote self-sufficiency.

All that scares you? Hmmm. . .

Well, I'm sorry. I shouldn't be so hard on Reagan. He certanily did act like the greatest president of the 20th century. In fact, he deserved an Oscar!
5 hours ago (9:38 PM)
Ronald Reagan is the greatest president of the 20th century? Oh, my. I still can't stop laughing.
5 hours ago (9:38 PM)
ALTHOUGH THEY DONT REALIZE IT, THE REPUBLICANS ARE A DYING BREED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
3 hours ago (11:37 PM)
As long as they court the likes of the Tea Party and the Gingriches of the world , you are right..To fart right or left is not gopod but especially right becuas eit is a VERY dangerous place when you take people rights away

Nothing to wonder about. Leadership. Obama doesn't have it.
3 hours ago (11:54 PM)
I wish I can agree with you. If Obama is not a leader, please tell me who American leaders are. Your answer will tell a lot about your own judgement.

Millions hang on every word of an actress named Sarah.

Who is teaching them not to trust the ("lame stream") media, that little thing that turns actors back into politicians.
5 hours ago (9:24 PM)
baldwin said he would move to canada if bush were re elected . he didn't . then he was caught verbally abusing his daughter , but that's okay , right ? Obama promised you all hope and change . if you got hope from a man , good for you , but there has been no change , especially in the way all politicians are raping this nation .
5 hours ago (9:37 PM)
That's because when W was president we all lost hope.
3 hours ago (11:39 PM)
You mean to tell me that Obama has not effected the Stock Market? Bush made my 401k lose about $50,000.00 .. Undwer Obama I have made that money back upo and added another 15, ooo.00 that is change I and millions of others can live with
7 hours ago (7:42 PM)
Everyone is so quick to bash Obama. One person mentioned how, of course under Bushfor the first six years things were great! It's the opposite. ALSO Bush came into a presidency with a great economy, high employment rate oh and one important factor A SURPLUS! Bush left Obama his office with a 1.4 trillion dollar debt, no surplus, unemployment, housing foreclosure. Oh but according to some all of this happened within two years. Perhaps because Bush exhausted the SURPLUS.
If Obama is so horrible, please list the accomplishments by the Republicans to create jobs, ignite the economy and cease foreclosures.
What have they done? I want a list. Not a list on what Democrats aren't doing but a comprehensive list of what measures, bills, programs anything that Republicans have done to forward the country out of this mess?
6 hours ago (8:26 PM)
Obama spends money like a drunken salior---he is an embarassment to our country
6 hours ago (8:43 PM)
And most Republicans are merely the last part...embarassments to our country.

Bush's last fiscal deficit was $1.6 trillion (Oct 1, 2008 thru Sep 30, 2009). That's what Obama inherited, along with the worst recession since the Great Depression.
4 hours ago (10:22 PM)
If that is so, then why has every Republican administration left office with huge deficits, including the beloved Regan? Where is that embarrassment?
3 hours ago (11:40 PM)
during a recession you have to spend to stimulate the economy...just giving bigger tax breaks to oil companies & other giant corporations doesn't help, contrary to Republican talking points
3 hours ago (11:42 PM)
The only embarassment to this country is your lack of respect for the President of the United States. Like him or not his posistion commands respect..
4 hours ago (10:18 PM)
The only reason they had a surplus was because they raided the Social Security funds to pay off the debt.
3 hours ago (11:21 PM)
I agree with you, Obama is getting a raw deal. He is doing as well as any President can be expected to be doing. The problem is that we have a deeply divided country and we are even more divided on how to fix the economy. But I think that it is fair to say that there will be a reduction in workers in the public sector, and we will go into some austere times. This problem was over 20 years in coming, and it won't go away overnight. There is really nothing the president can do except stay the course.
7 hours ago (7:26 PM)
yeah he lacks white skin. why else would a senator lambast him for having the nerve to make BP pay for their oil spill (it took over ten years for exxon to pay up and then they paid a pitance) and why else would poor people rally behind the rich to stave off getting rid of the bush tax cuts (which haven't trickled down), and what is the big deal about reforming wallstreet? obviously they need regulation. Asking wallstreet to monitor themselves is like asking a prader-willi child (ask somebody) to monitor himself at an all you can eat buffet. Alec, I am impressed!
7 hours ago (7:23 PM)
"I wonder what that could be?"
Of course, I know what you're going for. But could it be something else, for different people?
Could it be that every time there is a vital fight with the Republicans, one that will shape the course of the country and slow or accelerate the decline of the middle class, and freedom and democracy, Obama fights hard, and then loses gracefully? Or sometimes "wins" by neatly gutting what he was fighting for to get it passed? Could it be that some want a president who will actually slow or maybe even reverse that slide into third-world status that has heralded the Republican Revolution, rather than continuing the 30 year Democratic hand-wringing acquiescence to it? The good cop / bad cop routine is past the point of wearing thin. It is nearing the point of Wisconsin-style rebellion.
5 hours ago (9:20 PM)
Yup.

In response to you, Aacme, I have to be really honest. I think that most white Americans would be quick to stereotype the President should he decide to lose his cool with the Republican party. So I'm glad, in a way, that he hasn't blown his stack. There are things that the President has done that I don't agree with and I am a conservative Democrat (born & raised Catholic), but let's be a little realistic here: I give respect to this man for wanting to knock some damn sense into this country while trying to use diplomacy with the "Good Ole Boys" in the Republican party. First of all: AMERICA LOOK IN THE MIRROR! You have yourselves to blame for being the greedy a**holes that you are. No matter what your skin color, YOU ALL DECIDED TO MAKE THE CHOICES YOU MADE AND NOW YOU'RE PAYING FOR IT! I don't feel sorrow or empathy for the greed that overruled logic in this country and has caused this country to be in the position it's in. Get over it! You should have thought about things before you started living above your means. I'm so freaking sick and tired of the blame game against this man. Just let the man try to get us somewhat out of this mess because if you think this is gonna get fixed ANYTIME soon...you all need psychiatric help!
