Mac OS X Lion: 9 Things You Need To Know About Apple's Newest Operating System (PHOTOS)

The Huffington Post   |  Dean Praetorius First Posted: 06- 6-11 05:38 PM   |   Updated: 06- 6-11 05:38 PM

During Monday's WWDC keynote address, Apple previewed a nearly complete OS X Lion, the latest update of it's operating system built for Mac laptops.

While some have speculated that Lion may be the last in the OS X line, the newest iteration of the popular OS brought a host of new features, including multi-touch gestures and an impressive auto-save feature that could make the "I was almost done but I forgot to save" excuse all but irrelevant.

But are they enough to get you to upgrade?

Check out our slideshow for some of the most crucial things you need to know about Mac OS X Lion, including new features, when to get it and how much it will cost you.

Auto-Save/Versions

Apple's hoping to make manual saving a thing of the past. Lion will automatically save just about everything that needs to be saved, including document and photo editing software. The goal is to have incredibly recent changes saved, much like what's standard in iOS.

My only disappointment is the fact the entire computer and OS cannot be imbedded behind my left ear thus enabling a complete hands-free experience.

oh don't worry, that's coming in the next version.

The UI tweaks look a lot like GNOME 3, and I mean that in a good way. I'm sure there are more significant updates "under the hood," but it's hard to make those look flashy at a keynote speech.

As someone who does a lot of exploratory work in the Adobe apps I'm hoping the auto-save is optional. InDesign already does it and that's ok for that app, but auto save in photoshop would be less than ideal.

What is missing is intelligent page tiling... being able to easy tile open windows to a purpose... it's fine to see all the pages, but then, after choosing on, one is back to the clutter that drove you to command center in the first place.
Tiling. Windows has it. Gee.

A few UI tweaks do not a full version upgrade make.

Automatically saving? Appleworks, the wonderful integrated program that Apple abandoned, has been doing just that for more than a 20 years. Bring back AppleWorks!

Right now Microsoft and Google are looking Lion over trying to figure out how to copy it.

What the article fails to mention that OSX Lion will only be available via the Mac App Store, with no physical discs available. That means that if you have low bandwidth, no internet, or no credit card, you're out of luck.

Honestly when it came to a lot of the features at the conference...the full screen apps, the thumbs keyboard, the touch features on a PC platform, etc. I could see why Microsoft previewed Windows 8 last week.  Otherwise we would be hearing nothing but how Microsoft had 'copied' Apple!

When the iPad came out, my response to nay sayers was, "No, I absolutely see the market for this. I'm not part of that market, but I know they'll sell a ton of them. But I'm more a MacBook guy."

The problem here is that Lion is aiming straight at that same market, but now they're coming after my MacBook. I'm quite happy with Snow Leopard. I don't want apps taking over my whole screen. I've been fighting that mentality for about 25 years, ever since I got my first megapixel display.

So I'm a little skeptical here. Hopefully the bulk of these new features are optional.

They are optional... You don't have to click the full screen button for the apps. You don't have to use the multi touch gestures or the app list to see all your apps on one screen.. These features are all activated. However, there are some things Apple is forcing on us, including having to download the OS upgrade using the APP Store... I'm really hoping that the auto save and version tracking is OPTIONAL and we can turn that off. I know you can turn back on the "light up" on your dock that shows you when an app is open.. By default in lion they turned that off for some lame reason..

After having just DOWNGRADED my 2008 iMac from 10.6.5 back to 10.5.8 because of months of constant system freezes, I won't be *upgrading* any time soon.

So you're the one that found something wrong with Snow Leopard.
