Nintendo Wii U 3ds E3

Nintendo unveiled its new Wii console, the Wii U, at the E3 Conference, and the latest system is a hybrid between a traditional controller, a portable gaming device and a tablet computer.

The Wii U has a 6.2-inch touchscreen along with analog controls, motion sensors, gyroscope, accelerometer, speakers and a camera. The controller can be used in a variety of ways with the Wii, including video conferencing, and digital interchange between controller and screen. All Wii games, controllers and accessories work are backwards compatible with the new system. It will be available sometime in 2012.

In a short demo, a man playing a video game on his Wii on TV changes the channel to baseball for a friend, and continues playing the game on the Wii U controller. In another instance, the Wii U controller was used to target the location for a thrown pitch, to catch a ball in the air, and even put on the floor to serve as the tee for a golf ball while a Wiimote was used to hit it onto the screen. Other users were shown playing a board game just on the Wii U screen, and drawing a picture on the screen using a stylus.

The Wii U also lets users web browse and then transfer images and video in HD from the controller onto the big screen. It can also be used for video chatting using the controller's camera.

The controller is "not designed to be a portable game machine," but for multiple kinds of play, according to U.S. Nintendo president Reggie Fils-Aime, who called it "unique, unifying and maybe even utopian."

"We decided on this new structure ... because we want to create a strong bond between games, your TV and the Internet," said Fils-Aime, as well as between "you, your friends and your family, all interacting in the same room."

Nintendo is developing Smash Brothers to work on both Nintendo's 3DS portable player as well as for Wii U. In addition, a new Mario game, Super Mario Brothers Me is forthcoming for the system.

The new platform is designed to be satisfying for both beginners, and dedicated gamers, with "deeper game experiences" and "wider" appeal, according to Nintendo.

"We decided on this new structure ... because we want to create a strong bond between games, your TV and the Internet,"

Is this what people really want?
Personally I find this push to integrate every possible electrical component to be really annoying and a step in the wrong direction, but I may be in the minority.

Is it wrong that I only use my PS3 for DVD's and the internet? I wish these companies would come out with a better web browser.

I think a Zelda game is almost certainly guaranteed, unless Nintendo goes completely out of business or something drastic happens between now and then.

For those worried about holding the controller you might want to take a look at this video.

the controller has a headphone jack and speaker volume control. It's also designed to fit in your hands unlike Ipads and other tablet devices.

It looks to me like something you could even rest in your lap, since the controls are towards the top of the device.

Are you going to need to whip out $200 for every controller you buy?

No. Because you won't be able to buy a second controller, or have any reason to do so. Observe: http://www.computerandvideogames.com/306087/news/wii-u-console-and-controller-wont-be-sold-separately/

Have fun watching the kiddies fight over who gets to use the "good" controller.

I was a little worried about that myself. I did break a couple SNES controllers while fighting with my sister.

Ironically, this gave me my first opportunity to take apart and repair a piece of computer equipment. SNES controllers were easy to fix because usually all that happened is the cable got yanked out and needed to be re-fitted. I don't think the Wii U controller would be quite so easy to repair.

Nintendo has a way of thinking outside the box has kept that company fresh. I discounted the Wii for its lack of processing power, but I love it. For the most part, I game on my PC, which destroys any benchmark a person could get from a ps3 or xbox 360. I think Nintendo understands that creativity will always out preform specs. Lately my favorite games, on a console, have been 2D scrollers- Braid and Donkey Kong Country- neither of which require amazing video processing. Besides the best games of next year will be on PC- Diablo 3, Bioshock Infinite, Elder Scrolls etc. Go go Nintendo!

I hope this new system has some real guts to it, rather than the reiterated GameCube innards that comprised the Wii, outdating itself at release. As to the controller, is this the Atari Jaguar controller on steroids?? And can you play Wii games right on the controller? If so, Sega Nomad anyone? Sadly, that failed since it did not say "Nintendo" on it. However, the non-game uses are fascinating.

Graphics do not make a game fun or movies good. Final Fantasy 13 was the most beautiful pile of crud I have ever played!

I agree that eye candy does not a game make, but dismissing the graphics factor is just plain silly, it's one of many components that make a good game.

Having said the above, Final Fantasy 13 failed on so many levels that it was difficult to call the game good.
a) bad narrative
b) bad gameplay
c) convoluted plot (if there was one)
d) mediocre to bad music.

I ended up selling my PS3 since the only game I enjoyed on it was Little Big Planet, and getting a Wii. Favorite games amongst our group of friends? Tetris Party & Trauma center.
And we are a bunch or hard core PC gamers. Just, in my experiance at least, the game console is becoming more of a social party/ interaction thing. like charades or pictionary.

Wait and see.

The fact that few games ever went to the Wii (probably due to the PS2 level of graphics capability), it's hard to see if it will be popular. I do like that fact that the processing and graphics are slated to be better than current gen platforms (PS3 and 360).

I also have mixed feelings about the controller. I question the use (if I die because I have to look down at my controller all the time, that will be annoying) and the price. These will NOT be cheap, especially considering the PS3 controllers run around $45.
11:31 AM on 6/08/2011
I think the screen on the controller will be more distracting than useful, at least for more traditional 'core games. On top of that, the controller looks like it would be very uncomfortable. The ONLY reason I would see myself getting the Wii U (what a stupid name) is for the big 3 IPs from Nintendo: Mario, Metroid, and Zelda.
11:26 AM on 6/08/2011
Thats a monster of a controller. Im a little skeptical.
24 hours ago (2:57 PM)
It's very light weight and those that have held it actually say it is quite comfortable since it is designed to be griped unlike for example Ipads.
22 hours ago (4:49 PM)
That's good to know. I'd like to give it a shot.
11:24 AM on 6/08/2011
I know a lot of people are apprehensive about the controller, but dear Lord did it ever click for me. That right there is not so much a controller, but a hub. It gets to become anything it needs to be. Pilot controls. A dashboard of abilities. Link's inventory at your fingertips at all times.
02:26 PM on 6/08/2011
When I saw the video of using the controller for Link's inventory, I squealed like a school girl. SO excited!

Funny that Nintendo just admitted that it used 360 and PS3 videos during its demo of the new unit.

You should know there is footage of U wii games such as Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon online.

The people who are doing Darksiders 2 are stating that the Wii U version will look better then the xbox 360 and PS3 versions and be the best version.

you'd think they'd have gameplay for a console that isn't out for well over a year?

They had footage of the new Zelda game that isn't out yet, so yes, I would expect them to have gameplay videos.
