YOUR Desktop Dining Tips
We're having a great discussion on the blog about the fine art of "desktop dining" and how to make it more... palatable. We'll be doing a drawing from all of your entries and choosing two to win copies of Jeff Potter's indispensable Cooking for Geeks. Here are a few excerpts from the thread so far:
"Combination cooking: Use the microwave to get the inside hot, then the toaster oven to crisp and brown the outside. It works great on leftovers like panko crusted chicken." -Kent Durvin
"I cook big batches of casserole-type dishes on weekends, dole them out into emptied & cleaned 1lb. cottage cheese containers, and freeze them. At any one time I have quite a variety of entrees ready to go." -Stefan Jones
"I cook sweet potatoes in the microwave, then cover with a bit of olive oil and truffle salt - quick gourmet dining." -Terry H
Eligible commenting period runs to midnight PDT on Sunday.

This papercraft Leica by British artist Matthew Nicholson is cool by itself, but as an added bonus, it’s actually a functioning pinhole camera that images on 35mm stock. [via GeekyGadgets]

Highlights from this week's MAKE Flickr pool roundup include a solar-powered turntable, a lovely shot of a justifiably proud potter's first wheel-thrown pots, a fantastically hare-brained concept sketch of a rocking chair with what appears to be a jet engine, and what may well be my favorite picture of Matt Richardson ever.

Normally, ultra slow motion video requires very expensive cameras and lots of light. Using an unconventional method reminiscent of Eadweard Muybridge’s Sallie Gardner at a Gallop, Destin from Smarter Every Day caught slow motion video of a bullet coming out of a gun. Since that particular fast action is easily repeatable, he was able to [...]

My favorite bartender/mixologist/drink blogger Jefferey Morgenthaler has written a number of excellent articles about making your own cocktail compounds, such as homemade tonic and grenadine. I recently dug up this oldie but goodie on making gin in your kitchen by infusing neutral spirits or vodka with juniper berries and other spices. …what many people don't [...]

It’s mesmerizing to watch Pe Lang‘s mechanical artwork in motion, especially this machine that arranges droplets of water on an omniphobic surface. From Triangulation: Falling objects – positioning systems from 2009-2011 is a custom made machine that adds drops of water onto a special textured surface. Each drop forms into an almost perfect sphere through [...]

News From The Future: Dolphins Soldiers …the Navy sent some real marine mammals into action off the Pacific. Four bottle-nosed dolphins trained to find underwater mines demonstrated their abilities during Operation Trident Fury, a joint U.S.-Canadian military exercise held earlier this month off the coast of Vancouver, British Columbia. The dolphins are part of the [...]

I love the concept behind the Bay Area Workshop Weekend event -- take the inspiration and enthusiasm generated from Maker Faire Bay Area and present a series of workshops the follow weekend so that folks can learn what they say at the Faire. Nearly 100 people did just that, on May 28 and 29.

A commenter on my recent dried orange peel box post pointed us at this truly outstanding phototutorial from Bushcraft USA forum member Eric Methven. Eric dshows off his classic leatherworking skills and equipment in a series of three detailed posts, featuring more than 50 photographs carefully documenting each step of his process for making these lovely flasks, from raw leather side to finished product. [Thanks, Tim Harris!]
