Nice hopefully it clears things up for the people inviting more so than now.

"DurpyDerp invites you to play Black Ops." (10 times while i'm playing a Sports title online...)

So Beacons are basically like a status? So when someone looked at me on a friends list they'd see:

Flamesbane: currently watching 3rd Rock from the Sun on Netflix, wants to Play Halo Reach

Sounds pretty cool, if a bit obvious...

@flamesbane

That's what I gathered. The main point seems to be that you'll no longer have to be in a particular game in order to let people know you want to get together for it. That's actually pretty convenient, since you wanting to play a game with others doesn't necessarily mean you want to play it by yourself in the meantime.

What I'd like is some way to see who on my friends list have played a particular game. If I get a new game, I want an option on the dashboard (alongside Install to hard drive) that will scan my friends list, that way I know who to message to see if they want to play co-op or multiplayer with me without comparing game history for each person individually. Likewise, when I find a game on Game Marketplace, I should have that same option, so I know if any of my friends have that game before I decide to buy it or to buy DLCs.

Man, when i first read this, i thought it was a way of recommending an XBLA game--which is something i've thought would be nice previously. Sounds pretty simple, but sometimes i'll see a game, and think "man, i think so-and-so would like this" or "I wish my blah-blah had this game so he could play online with me."
Of course, i could send him a message real quick, but i would just like to be able to hit something that says "Hey, check this out." Kind of like those Facebook notices, but not NEAR as annoying...

Doesn't Live already have a recommend feature for Arcade games ? I swear I've used it before to spam my friends to buy Marble Blast Ultra

I'm pretty sure it was in the pre-NXE Dashboard, I haven't been on an Xbox in a while so I don't really know if it is still there

I don't think this is what I want - I've always watched a way to put a "beacon" up that I'd like to play a certain game if anyone is up for it, while I'm playing some single player game or something else. That way I don't have to message or invite everyone.

@briscott

If you check out the blurb about it in the press release, that actually seems to be exactly what it is.

@briscott

This is EXACTLY what you want.

A little reading comprehension goes a long way.

@ummhello the synopsis seems to be that it'll let you know what users are doing - not let them you what you want to do.

I don't mean to be "that" guy, but instead of "take a queue", it should be "take a cue".

My humble guess is that it works like this:

I set beacons for Black Ops, Clash of Heroes and Need for Speed. It immediately "publishes" all these beacons (might include facebook sharing, tweeting, dashboard, etc). Then, I'm watching Netflix, and even though I have notifications disabled during video, one of my friends launches Clash of Heroes and I get a notification. Also, when my friend launches CoH he immediately gets a notification that I have an active beacon set.

Further polishing could involve little indicators as a friend scrolls through his games list. Say he scrolls past Black Ops, he might see a tiny version of my avatar overlayed as well as any other friends with beacons for that game. (Okay, this feature is unlikely but would be very cool).

In short, my thoughts are:
-Multiple Beacons
-Two way notifications
-Seamless, visual indicators
-List of "I want to play this" (don't send me invites for Barbie: Unleashed).
-Social integration

EA did it best in this years (and last years) Tiger Woods. Send an "invite" to friends and you get XP for your golfer. You could even do this from the demo! Incentive to invite friends (beyond having someone to play with!).

What would make this beacon stuff be even more awesome - if you could have a list of "what your friends are playing" and it's ranked based on how much a game is played by how many people. So games on the top are the must buys. But they should also take it a step further and make 2 lists, one for single player games and one for multiplayer games. Games with both could be included on both lists and the amount of time played in either single or multi is what's used to make the calculation.

To make this better, make friends lists bigger, so we can add more people we just meet online playing favorite games. Then when they start playing a new game, you'll be able to follow suit based on the lists I explained earlier.
