Scott Pelley Begins 'CBS Evening News' Anchor Tenure

Scott Pelley

By DAVID BAUDER   06/ 6/11 08:35 PM ET   AP

NEW YORK -- It was Scott Pelley's first night as anchor of the "CBS Evening News" on Monday, but you'd hardly know it.

The veteran "60 Minutes" correspondent made no mention of the change. From Afghanistan to France, through wayward public officials and promising cancer treatments, he covered the news.

"I'm Scott Pelley," the Texan said at the broadcast's end. "For all of us at CBS News around the world, good night."

Pelley replaced Katie Couric as anchor of the third-rated nightly newscast, seen on average by about 6 million people a night, and his debut was as understated as hers was bold five years ago. Couric sought to remake the evening newscast with a format that emphasized her interviewing skills, but CBS went back to a more traditional approach when viewers rejected the reboot.

Pelley's version of the evening news may have jogged the memories of veteran CBS viewers. The network built a replica of the world map that used to hang behind Walter Cronkite when that news legend was anchor and debuted it Monday. CBS also dusted off background music composed for the "CBS Evening News" in 1987 but ditched when Couric took over.

CBS led the newscast with a report by correspondent Mandy Clark, on patrol with U.S. forces in Afghanistan. Pelley then discussed the progress of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq with correspondents Lara Logan and David Martin.

He waited until after the first commercial break to report on the admission by U.S. Rep. Anthony Weiner that he sent a racy photo to a woman. Meanwhile, on the ratings leader, NBC's "Nightly News," Brian Williams led the newscast with the Weiner story. Pelley and Williams may have a budding rivalry: Williams took notice when the New York Daily News reported last month that Pelley referred to "Nightly News" as "nothing special" in an internal call.

On ABC, "World News" anchor Diane Sawyer was in Afghanistan and led her newscast with two reports from that country.

During his program, Pelley brought correspondents on for brief discussions of their stories, offering gently leading questions.

Story continues below

"The five American soldiers that were killed in Baghdad today. What happened there?" he asked Pentagon correspondent Martin.

"John, what's the future of this therapy?" he asked medical correspondent John LaPook after a report on a new treatment for lung cancer.

CBS has sought to bring some of the luster of "60 Minutes," TV's top-rated newscast, to the evening news. Newspaper ads for Pelley's first day pictured him with the iconic stopwatch in the background and the words: "What if you can have the world-class original reporting of `60 Minutes' every weeknight? Well, now you can."

Pelley will remain a "60 Minutes" correspondent, but there was no link between the shows Monday night. The newsmagazine is on its summer hiatus.

Left unmentioned on Pelley's first newscast: Monday's announcement that his predecessor, Couric, was signing on with ABC for a daytime talk show and work with that network's news division.

I miss Katie Couric! She was so deep and she appealed more to that overlooked demographic - 13 year old girls.

The one positive thing I can say about Scott Pelley is that at least he won't be on "30 Rock" or "Saturday Night Live" hamming it up (I really lost respect for Brian Williams when he did that). Pelley knows who he is--a solid newsman--and doesn't appear to want to be anything else but that. Good for him! I hope it helps CBS News. I also hope the network will trade the cheaper, "twenty-something" correspondents for some seasoned journalists. It's hard to take a story seriously when the person reporting it looks like he's 12-years-old.

I actually liked Scott Pelley's delivery. It was very good. I was especially happy that he led with Afghanistan instead of so-called "Weiner-gate", which is the most ridiculous non-story I've seen in recent times. Every media outlet should be covering Afghanistan and the non-war war in Iraq, where 5 U.S. troops were killed on June 6, but you'd never know it with Weiner's penis and chest splashed on every channel.

I quit watching when they let Dan Rather go. I had been a viewer sinse Cronkite now I'm back.
America need to re think a lot of things. America needs newspapers too but greed killed them
off .Good luck Scott.

Yes, its integrity Is back with "her" gone. I never understood why she had to attack and ignore Dan Rather, That really turned me off and sent me to ABC and NBC. Scott will be great and the quality of news even better!

You miss Rather? They guy who used a forgery and ran it as a news story on eve of an election?

Scott Pelley is good. Really good. Solid news guy. You do not get the impression this guy is interested in celebrity/scandal/gotcha journalism.....which is just killing journalism in this country.

Another white man delivering the news.  Weren't there any qualified African-American women available?
5 hours ago (10:48 AM)
Apparently not. Maybe you should watch CNN? They have black anchors since the color of a persons skin affects who is delivering the news for you. Just a suggestion, and I am not white.

Skin color does not matter to me.  It sure does matter to Libs.  A Lib should have posed the question.  Not I.

you know, that's the #1 problem with news today.....that's the first question always asked....how is this going to effect the ratings?

to hell with the ratings. Get yourself a really solid news guy with integrity and go with him. That's Scott Pelley.

One of my favorite reporters on '60 Minutes'! Congrats Scott! I'll be watching. I had the opportunity of meeting him at the airport in Columbus, OH late last year with his crew. When I yelled "Mr Pelley!", an older member of his cam crew called his attention to me and he took the time to say "Hi I'm Scott Pelley"; to which I replied "I know! I'm a huge fan!" Pleasant exchange. Talked to me and my brother for a couple of minutes before heading for the security line. On the following Sunday, I watched '60 Minutes' and learned that he was in town to interview Ben Bernanke, Sam Palmisano of IBM and other CEOs at a forum at The Ohio State University.

You know, I just don't understand the mindset of the moderators around here anymore.

I just wrote a post congratulating Scott Pelley that was not controversial, didn't attack anyone, and didn't have any naughty words in it.......

and it's gone. Scrubbed. Censored. Banished to oblivion.

WTF?

Some of the moderation around here is unbelievable. You can post a racist message and it will stay on for days and a regular post with no profanity or defamation will get cut down.

It's ridiculous.

If the media outlets that Arianna Huffington appears on held her to the same standards that the people that comment on this site are held to she would never be on TV again.

I've been toning down my posts for months now and yet I still can only get less than half past the heavy handed moderation.

Formerly a place where you could have strong opinions and engage in robust debate, this place is rapidly becoming milquetoast.

I'm so thrilled with this new anchor let's get CBS back on top. Brian Williams ego is out of control and Diane is doing pretty good but I prefer the reporters on CBS and now that they have a strong anchor I think they will begin to rise in the ratings.

Has always seemed like a smart, solid, old school journalist. But he'd better have a back-office file on the Lance Armstrong story that he can show Armstrong's lawyers in private...or he may be in trouble. Armstrong has the wealth and demeanor to make Pelley's like very difficult in the near future.
6 hours ago (10:37 AM)
Good journalists always seek the 'other side of the story.' Pelly and 60 Minutes offered Armstong the opportunity to appear in the segment to address the issues raised. He refused.
A 'no comment' and hiding behind Lawyers (who always tell their 'questionable' clients to shut up) are the first signs that people want to keep stuff hidden.
Nuff' said.

Hopefully CBS learned a lesson. Don't hire a celebrity to anchor your evening news.

Congratulations to Scott Pelley on a job well done.

On a day where the news cycle was dominated by the kind of cringe-worthy silliness that has come to dominate our media and our political process, the lead story on the CBS Evening News was about the war in Afghanistan. The forgotten war that's been raging for ten years that the media lost interest in and no one seems to talk about but is draining our treasury and creating a whole new generation of people who hate us.

Even as a self confessed news and information junkie, I haven't regularly watched a network evening newscast in forever. You guys keep this up and you just might win me back.
