Olympics TV Rights: NBC Retains Rights For Four More Games

Nbc Olympic Tv Rights

By STEPHEN WILSON   06/ 7/11 01:10 PM ET   AP

LAUSANNE, Switzerland -- Officials with knowledge of the decision say NBC has retained the U.S. Olympic television rights in a four-games deal through 2020 worth more than $4 billion.

The two officials spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Tuesday because the decision has not yet been officially announced by the International Olympic Committee.

NBC won a three-way bidding contest against ESPN and Fox.

It will have exclusive rights to the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi, Russia, the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, as well as the 2018 Winter Games and 2020 Olympics, whose sites have not yet been chosen.

NBC has broadcast every Summer Olympics since 1988 and every Winter Games since 2002.

NBC won a three-way bidding contest against ESPN and Fox.

ESPN, a channel that everyone doesn't get.

Fox! That's like selling your soul to the devil.

NBC is the obvious choice even if they were offering less money in the long run.

This is dreadful news. Are they deaf at NBC? I don't know anyone personally, and the posters here back it up, that praise the NBC coverage in either concept or content. I don't know how, or why they do it, but they can take something that is inherently compelling (a sporting competition) and suck the very life out of it. Bob Costas is the main sucker, but he has plenty of help. The man is insufferable.

It's too bad that NBC won it again.

After watching the Olympics in the UK, I discovered that in the US, we do not get to see most of the Olympics. In the UK, all sports are aired, if not live, on alternate channels.

The television rights to show the Olympics should carry the responsibility to actually show the different venues, not the fluff.

Was really hoping ESPN would get it even though I don't get ESPN. Hopefully they would've cut down on the human interest crap and show the events. Looks like 16 more years of getting results online and streaming what I want to watch. That is the future of TV anyway I guess. Also looks like 16 more years of absolutely no Paralympic coverage in the States too.

Yeah this is great news if you enjoy human interest stories, interviews with athletes you've never heard of and "stories of triumph and tragedy" as narrated by Bob Costas.

Of course, if you like watching Olympic Sports, this is terrible news of the worst kind. I suppose the dim possibility exists that NBC will finally figure out that they could easily double their ratings if only the would actually show more than 5 continuous minutes of sports coverage uninterrupted by commercials, but I won't count on it.

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! NBC Olympic overage is awful!!! Thank God I'll be in England during the Olympics!

NBC's coverage is abysmal. I would not watch it on Fox. ESPN would cut out a large section of viewers unless they went official stream crazy.

So really there was no winning regardless.

oh joy, looks like I'll be streamng it from various sites on the Internet agian.

Maybe this time around they will only lose around $200 million per season. Or maybe more.

Good.

Wouldn't watch if FOX got it.

This is terrible. NBC's Olympic coverage, when they actually cover an event only shows those events that Americans win. Back in the day when Jim MacKay anchored ABC's coverage, it was truly Olympian.
