Photos emerged on Sunday of ash in the aftermath of Saturday's eruption at Puyehue volcano in Chile, as well as a stunning lightning display.
The volcano sent a huge plume of smoke and ash into the sky on Saturday, causing the evacuation of approximately 600 people living nearby, the Associated Press reports. The eruption caused a portion of the Chile-Argentina border to be closed. No deaths or injuries have been reported at this time.
See photos below and watch video of lightning at the volcano here.

Lightning is seen amid a cloud of ash billowing from Puyehue volcano near Osorno in southern Chile, 870 km south of Santiago, on June 5, 2011. Puyehue volcano erupted for the first time in half a century on June 4, 2011, prompting evacuations for 3,500 people as it sent a cloud of ash that reached Argentina. The National Service of Geology and Mining said the explosion that sparked the eruption also produced a column of gas 10 kilometers (six miles) high, hours after warning of strong seismic activity in the area. The lightning is amazing. What a show. I never knew that happened. When I looked it up, it turns out it happens sometimes and sometimes not. They are not really sure why it happens, only that it seems connected to the height of the steam/ash plume. http://news.discovery.com/earth/volcano-eruption-lightning.html
This article briefly explains why in spite of Chile's fantastic number of volcanoes, the eruptions are usually pretty mild. http://www.volcanolive.com/chile.html

My son says the process is not completely understood but it is due to the static electricity that builds up in the clouds much like a regular storm cloud. .

Aah. You must not live on the West Coast, especially the Northern Cascades.
When I first started skiing at Mt Bachelor in Central OR., I couldn't get used to the holes here and there marked off by bamboo poles...I found out they were volcanic steam vents.

Volcanos recently (geologically speaking) can be found from the west coast all the way to the eastern edge of the Rocky Mountains (and everywhere in between). Two of the most prominent can be seen from space, one in northern Arizona and one in New Mexico. Both are cinder cones, stone cold black in color. The Carrizozo Malpais in south central New Mexico is about 5,200 years old, but looks like it cooled yesterday.
Meanwhile in nearby northern Arizona, there is a vast volcanic field just north of Flagstaff that spreads north, east and west for hundreds of square miles. Famous for Sunset Crater (as well as the San Francisco Peaks) there are literally hundreds of cinder cones dotting the landscape, many of which are so recent that they stand out clearly in photos taken from space. A couple of cinder cones in particular stand out distinctly due to their coal black color and lava flows. There are more than 500 volcanos in the San Francisco volcanic field, one dating between 1,200 and 500 years ago.
Amazing Pics of Volcanic Eruption - Sorry, thought this was another Democrat Anthony Weiner update, my bad. Still, it does remind one of the Bill Clinton re-runs, eh Monica?

Yes, this kind of activity has been expected.
Chile regularly experiences earthquakes, very much like California.
There were three good sized earthquakes in 2010, but the one you're talking about (8.8 magnitude) was a few hours south of Santiago, on the coast in the Maule region (kayakers would know it as the Bio Bio region) and involved some tsunamis which added to the devastation.
Chile, like California sits on the convergence of moving tectonic plates. Both the Nazca plate and the Antarctica plate are subducting under the South American plate. All along that fault line are volcanoes. It also explains the great height of the Andes from Santiago and north through Peru.
This is the second volcanic eruption I know about in the last 10 years. But if you want to be amazed at the number of volcanoes in Chile take a look at this list. The article also explains why the eruptions are usually pretty mild and the earthquakes pretty strong. http://www.volcanolive.com/chile.html

Why isn't the EPA drumming to get these volcanoes outlawed? Every day of every year there is an average of 5 volcanoes erupting somewhere in the world. Mankind's puny carbon footprint is baby crap compared to Ma Nature's.

Yes, and they bring the atmospheric temp down rather than up. Krakatoa brought the Earth's atmospheric temp down for a measuarble amount and kept it there for 12 years.

Do you realize that the eruption of this volcano wiped out the last 5 years of the world pollution reduction. It called climate change not global warming; it happened before it will happen again.

There is nothing willful here being done by nature. This eruption is just one of many thousands primed and ready to go all around the 'Ring of Fire' and other volcanic hot spots. All part of the underlying geological structure of planet earth which is home for all living earthlings.
