10 Least Expensive Private Colleges

First Posted: 06- 8-11 08:41 AM   |   Updated: 06- 8-11 08:42 AM

Private colleges are generally more expensive than public ones. Although, many private colleges defray the cost of tuition with financial aid (on average as much as 50%), sometimes even that kind of discount is not enough to justify attending the school.

However, some private colleges are just simply cheaper from the start than others. US News and World Report has more:

Among the 817 ranked private colleges—and schools whose rank is not published—that provided data to U.S. News in a 2010 survey of undergraduate programs, the average cost of tuition and required fees for the 2010-11 school year was $26,079. Comparatively, the 10 least expensive private colleges in the country each cost an average of $7,200 annually, for tuition and fees

To that end, we bring you a slide show of US News and World Report's ranking of the 10 least expensive private colleges. Then tell us, is your school on here? Weigh in in the comments section:

Berea is a great school with a strong history on civil rights. It was one of the first schools to fully integrate when it was founded in the mid 1800s...and was the only school in the south that was fully integrated well into the 20th century (until the state of Kentucky passed a law--which Berea challenged all the way to the US Supreme court--prohibiting integrated learning environments http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berea_College_v._Kentucky).

Is it really prestigious to study at a private college? What about the level of education? Is it any better compared to public colleges?

My alma mater, Deep Springs College, in California's White Mts, is also tuition-free. Nor is there a charge for room & board.
See www.DeepSprings.edu

It's definitely not for everyone. In fact, it's appropriate only for a few (not mention its one of the few men-only schools left) but for some of us it was perfect.

I looked up all of the colleges on the list, they all look like decent schools. Not eveyone goes to the "known" colleges. Some were religious, some not. No one should ever be made to feel bad about what college he or she chooses. Just because I did not hear of these schools before means nothing. There are thousands of colleges in the U.S.

I am guessing that the students who attend these schools exit as more educated people and that is a good thing.

That $910 was a typo, right?

Nope, not a typo, and Berea has an outstanding reputation.

As long as you want to work you behind off while attending. Nothing is free or cheap in the USA. Sutdent abuse is rampant too.

I'll have to check it out then. Must be very competitive to get in.

I'm definitely not one to say you should go to college just to get a job, but I went to a top 50 private liberal arts school, and had trouble finding work because few people heard of it outside of a certain geography. I'm sure more people could name the school Sarah Palin actually GRADUATED from, than any of these schools (except maybe Berea)

Let's please stop with educational elitism. These colleges provide quality educational programs, so just because you have never heard of them, does not make them any less important. Berea provides students work experience while getting an education--and alumni include Jack Roush (NASCAR Owner), and Sam Hurst (inventor of the first touch screen). Alice Lloyd is another school that provides a quality education and allows students that graduate and go to UK for graduate school the ability to live on campus rent free. Not everybody can go to Harvard folks.

BYU and its brethren can not offer a truly intellectual environment. I don't know of the others, but cultist beliefs, institutional bigotry, and plain stupid gullibility are not a part of any college a real student should want....
