Gah, Sakurai is developing it? Bummer, guy ruined Brawl by cramming too much pointless side crap into it. He shouldn't be allowed to touch the series anymore, he's lost his touch with it.

@Kafei464

I was thinking that as well. I wonder if he'll make it in his own franchise as well. I think The Rolling Western is looking quite good.

Anyways, what I'm thinking is that the announcement was simply a means to introduce the idea of the connection between the console and the handheld. Not the most elegant way to do so, especially cause we don't know how they will connect, but just like the rest of the info given, it's mostly just to give out ideas about the console rather than actually show what it can do.

Are you saying that the creator of smash brothers didn't do HIS game the way he wanted to be?

Smash Brothers started, is and will always be a party game, he never ever thought about it as a competitive game, you melee fans should stop doing this comments, something went wrong with melee that suddenly everyone thought of it as a "hardcore" fighter.

On topic: HAHA, that sakurai, I bet that this happened yesterday at the night.

Iwata: Hey dude, why don't you make a new smash for the new console
Sakurai: Uhm, I don't really know
Iwata: C'mon, you can do whatever you want.
Sakurai: alright

A few hours later

A new smash brothers for the 3DS and the WiiU

Sakurai: WHAT!
Iwata: (laughs)

Sakurai did just fine. it's the fans that are crazy. Utilizing the Melee's physics to the extreme, creating advanced techniques like wavedashing, creating an entire advanced metagame, and the getting mad when Brawl comes out and doesn't pay any attention to that stuff since it was an unintentional result of Melee's gameplay in the first place.

Brawl was a great game in terms of doing what they wanted to do with it: expand on the zany gameplay that was intended by design for melee before advanced players started creating this higher level metagame.

Yeah, it'd be nice if Sakurai began recognizing such techniques and catering to them, but you can't say he lost his touch. What he understood smash to be, he expanded, and did so well. It's just that the advanced players have a completely different perspective on the franchise. If Sakurai can get in touch with this perspective, he's perfectly capable of delivering what advanced players want.

It understandable -_-, after all I think it was to combat the idea of playing a console-like-game on a handheld that the PS vita can do, and to the naysayers that say the 3DS is not capable of doing such things no matter how much power it has. I'm excited for this (^_^) , but I got to ask, how long did it take to make BRAWL? (so that we may get a glimpse at how long we might have to wait for this game.)

don't worry about thinking of characters Sakurai, just include all of the current ones, bring back some you removed, and add Classic Mega Man as a playable character (with Capcoms approval of course). Oh and expand on the assist trophies, and bring back the pokeballs from melee, and one last thing change goldeen to magikarp (and have him evolve into Gyarados and wreck sh*t is he takes damage.....would be hilarious.

i really think they should reuse a lot of Brawls assets in order to reduce development time....the physics are fine (to me anyways), and they should keep ALL of the music and add some new tracks, and then keep a lot of the brawl levels.....think about it, this would reduce development time a lot really. ALSO the single player story mode should go through different realms of the Nintendo Universe and no Sunspace weird enemy stuff this time please.

Guys, they should put Sora and Goku in this one. That would be awesome! I also think they'll take out Jigglypuff and replace her with a character that the Japanese actually like, like Buneary. Tails, Lyn from Fire Emblem, and the Balloon Fighter are must haves as well. But not Ridley, he's too big. Do you think they'll make Miis playable? What if they put in Chuck Norris? LOL! Tom Nook could be in though, he's a professional boxer as he said in a line or two of the games. We also need Midna, Vaati, and Starfy. I'm so excited!

EDIT: Oh, and of course, the most important one, Geno.

@kmc2482
Yeah! I bet Skyward Sword would have already come out if they had just reused absolutely everything from Twilight Princess, made the art style a little different, and added some changes to the dungeons here and there. Why didn't they do that?

They only announced it because they had no other games to announce.

It's Pikmin 3 all over again.

And I don't know why people are surprised that it hasn't been started. Iwata basically said flat out that it wasn't going to start until Kid Icarus was out.

@Orian

Like Dinosaur Rex said, it wasn't Sakurai that was the problem, it was the fans that had been playing Melee for 6+ years and turning it into a competitive fighter that it was never intended to be.

It was a party game. It still IS a party game. But it masquerades as a fighting game. Do you think they would design a serious fighter to accomodate 4 people? No. It's supposed to be mindless fun with random situations. Not technical skills on an even playing field with no random luck values or MONEY ON THE LINE.

Not that there's anything wrong with playing like that.

But that was never what the series was intended. The problem is that players SHAPED Melee into something it wasn't, and then they were mad that Brawl was developed like SSB64 and Melee were intended, and not how they had morphed the game over 6 years.

you think they'll have a story mode again? because honestly, i played just until i unlocked all the characters, and then never again. i don't even have most of the enemy trophies.
anyway, some must-have features i (and others i'm sure) thought of:
Actual alternate costumes in addition to pallet swaps (it bugged me that only Wario got this.)
More detailed stage editor
Change the Y button from Jump to a new attack button, effectivley increasing the number of attacks each character has
Maybe some kind of quest creation mode?
allow more customization for online matches (let us do stock matches dammit!)

I liked Brawl a lot. I loved the smash balls and even tripping (though you should be able to turn it off). It is a party game and I play it as one but I know a lot of people who play it competitively. Nintendo should cater to both by allowing stuff to be turned off.

I'm more worried about characters. They've already hit all the classic characters they could last game. Olimar was their last new IP character that could work in Smash. R.O.B. is in and so were Meta Knight, Dedede from Kirby and Diddie Kong. Who can they add now? Trixie Kong, a Goomba? I can't think of any classic characters left. Just one off characters like Midna and Rosalina. They need more third- party support, my dream team would be:

Mega-Man (started on NES)
Cloud (Perfect opponent to Link)
Sora (Wildcard)
Tails (Sonic's already in)
Travis Touchdown (One of the few characters who started on the Wii platform and starred in somewhat successful series of games)

I... don't know what to think of this. On one hand, doing something like this in general is stupid. They shouldn't announce games this early, as it only let's the hype get ahead of itself and ends up disappointing. On the other hand, the E3 conference today was absolutely PARCHED when it came to game announcements, so maybe announcing this was for the best...

Either way, Smash Bros.! Cool stuff, even if we won't get it for a few more years now. X'P

well brawl can be played competitively but its extremely boring to watch.

i was at genesis 1 and while almost everyone was watching melee while only like 20 were watching the brawl matches going on. cant wait for genesis 2 later this summer. smash players from around the US and world pay good money to go but i live 2 miles away from the venue.
life cant get any sweeter.

on a related note i think smash 4 being announced crashed smashboards

Funny considering that you had to reach the last level to unlock all characters.
Also, I don't care more customization for online matches, just less laggy online matches ;)

OK but people, you should calm down. The game hasn't even started development yet. And surely Nintendo won't talk about Smash until... a long time.

Oh and I love Brawl, and agree on the morphed Melee you all talk about.

Yeah, I would have been fine with Brawl if the online wasn't the single worst online experience I've ever had with a console game. Get rid of the lag and allow for random matches with custom rules. Items/No Items, number of players, time/stock, that kind of thing.

The point was that he didn't replay it, and he didn't go back through the levels to capture all of the enemy/boss trophies, get 100% or unlock the other cutscenes you get for making different decisions (like the Lucario fight, or which Princess you save).

@KingZora64

Brawl is an amazing game.

@Hackernamedshodan

I'm still convinced it isn't real.

If we don't see so much as a logo or screenshot by the end of E3, I am still convinced that the game is fake.

The fact they said "NO PIKMIN DISCUSSION" at the round table initially. I mean, really? It's like they are treating Pikmin as if it's EarthBound. And THEY'RE the ones that announced the game (or rather, Miyamoto, who is the only one ever talking about it).

Moved to WiiU and far in development. I'll believe it when I see it. A game announced in 2008 (3 years ago) and we still have no proof it exists, and now it's not even on the console it was supposedly for originally.

I was happy to hear that there would be a version for both the U and the 3DS. That was enough of an announcement for me.

Also. Some people around here need to learn some reading comprehension skills:
""We really shouldn't have announced it for the general public at this timing, but since we have to assemble staff, we made the notice."

They decided to announce it early (even though nothing is ready to show off) so they could get a notice out there that they were looking for staff for the project.

Oh. And to the Sony Fanboy who has been trolling around here for some time now. It had NOTHING to do with anything announced about Vita. No one is scared of Sony anymore. They are in last place in both the console and handheld segment. Microsoft and Nintendo don't need to react to what they are doing, because everything they have done for the last few years has landed them in last place.
