Stanley Cup Finals: Canucks' Overtime Win Puts Bruins Behind 2-0

Canucks

Posted: 06/ 4/11 10:58 PM ET

The Vancouver Canucks are two games away from a Stanley Cup win after winning a thrilling 3-2 in early overtime, putting them up 2-0 in the series.

The Canucks got off to an early 1-0 lead but Boston scored two second-period goals. Vancouver tied the game in the third period. The game went into overtime after a third period that saw the Canucks outshoot the Bruins.

The series moves to Boston, where the teams play Game 3 on Monday. Game 4 is also in Boston on Wednesday.

Earlier Saturday, the City of Vancouver set up two giant screens in the downtown core with space for thousands of fans, and both were almost near capacity in the hour before the puck dropped Saturday, with lineups of people who would be forced to find somewhere else to watch.

Spectators in blue and green Canucks jerseys, shorts and shades sat on lawn chairs while some tossed around beach balls.

Chants of "We want the cup!" alternated with "Bruins suck!" — particularly when a rare, but conspicuous, fan in a Boston Bruins jersey was spotted in the crowd. The team hasn't made the Stanley Cup final since 1994, and it's never won the cup in its four-decade history.

Out worked and out classed tonight, Canucks. Finally a definitive score and it's all Bruins. The soft Sedins were invisible...when not getting crushed by Tim Thomas and taking 10-minute major penalties.

Biting, taunting, and dirty hitting can only take you so far.

Canucks might be the biggest dir.tbag team I've ever seen.

First biting, then taunting about biting, and now a slimy hit on Horton that may have truly hurt him.

Garbage team.

That wasn't a dirty hit-- a little late but still a clean hit.

Wrong. Very late, dirty hit. Hence, thrown out of the game and give a 5-minute major. Should be gone for the remainder of the series.

Disgraceful.

Boston shows up with one decent line of forwards and a coach who sits Seguin and plays Chara way too much. But what do the B's fans focus their attention on? One bad play by a goalie who has played lightsout and a facewash gone bad. Way to pay attention. Go Canucks!!!

Like winning the Stanley? Swing by on Wednesday. Not exactly original, but it hasn't happened for Boston in a long time

Over 70,000 fans on Granville Street last night during and after the game. Many thousands more in Yaletown, Gastown, Kitsilano, and the West End.

Rogers Arena is sold out for tomorrow's "away" game, with tickets going at $10.00 (USD $10.20) to watch the game on the big screens inside.

The Commodore Ballroom is sold out, with numerous other venues being jammed all over the city to watch the game on television.

The CBC Plaza will again see thousands standing outside to watch the game on their screens.

I hope the Bruins win tomorrow just to prolong the madness that has gripped Vancouver (and Canada).

Go Canucks!

Yes. It would be very fine to have the Canucks win at home, but better in the 5th game than the 7th.

2 more games! Go nucks go! This series is probably one of the most nail-biting ones i've seen.
12:19 PM on 6/05/2011
The overtime goal was a microcosm of the series: speed entering the zone, Thomas buys the fake shot and overcommits, Burrows out-battles Chara, puts it into an empty net, game over. The Bruins have no answer for the Canucks' speed, hitting, depth, and compete-level. While the Canucks have no passengers in their lineup Horton, Kaberle, and a few other Bruins are MIA. Canucks in five.

Listen, the first game was a 1-0 victory with 18 seconds left. The second game was a victory in OT on a blown play by the Bs.

The Bruins have "no answers"? Really? Then why have the Canucks relied upon last-second flukey "heroics"?

Meanwhile, where has Kesler been? Henrik Sedin? Where was Burrows in the first game (when not biting another player)? Why were the Sedins so invisible in Game 1?
21 hours ago (12:38 PM)
and?....scoreboard
19 hours ago (1:55 PM)
The bruins have one player... tim thomas. thats it and that is the only reason they stand a chance. Depth is the reason the canucks will win. if H&D dont show we have 3 more lines that can and will step up.

But please do keep pouting its only 2 more losses.

Kudos, NHL! You not only allowed a player to bite another player without punishment, but you allowed him to be the Game 2 hero when he shouldn't even have been playing.

Fun game, though. This series hasn't disappointed...the wrong team just keeps winning.

Go Bs! Hopefully some home cooking will help.
08:57 PM on 6/05/2011
What? You'd rather watch curling?

No skin was broken, so, it's nowhere near the level of injuries most go through in a game...stick your finger in my mouth? Hey, it might get bit.

Come on, the Canucks have never won the Cup. Maybe it's their turn to win.
09:04 PM on 6/05/2011
Whiner ......but if the finger finds it's way into your mouth ..... and sorry to break it to you but the Bs are going to need more than home cooking to make a difference.

Ooops, good call Nostradamus. Bruins could only muster 8 goals.

Canucks embarrassed the league with their classless tactics and their ineptitude tonight.

I am with you. Great series so far. B's need to get a big win at home tonight. This isn't the first series we have been down 2-0.
GO BRUINS!!!
22 hours ago (11:11 AM)
the series is great because neither team is playing their game, its a game of chicken between two teams who need it bad, boston flinched twice, but it could so easily be the other way around.
20 hours ago (12:40 PM)
kind of like allowing a player run players at the end of the game and throwing water bottles on fans(same EXACT thing John T got suspended for in the playoffs)...hmmm wonder why they replaced Colin Campbell for the rest of the season?...it might have SOMETHING to do with the one way discipline....

This is very different from my days as a Habs fan, when they were pretty much expected to win. I haven't been so excited about NHL hockey in years. I hope the fans and the Vancouver constabulary keep it all under control - it's turning into at least the second biggest party Lotusland has ever seen.
